Indian hockey is in decline. India even failed to qualify for Olympics. International Olympic Association is worried about the declining popularity of hockey, as the one billion population on whose basis hockey could thrive has lost the interest. That's because they are mostly on the losing side. But what is the root cause?
Once upon a time, hockey was a game for all. All you individually need was a stick to play. But now you need a turf that can be installed with the investment of million of dollars. That means, majority goes out of picture. Now, who would be interested in a game, which they can't themselves play. It all started when hockey shifted to artificial turf. If we really want to save hockey from extinction, or at best, a sport played by royalty, we need to shift it back to the grass.
