Do you have any stories about your best friends and long -lost friends? Lately, I've been having flashes of memory about my first best friend whom I met in Manila when I was studying at the St. Anthony School. We were in prep school, so that makes us six years old at that time. I can still remember her name, Margaux dela Merced. I even remember how it's spelled because her grandma, who brought her to school everyday, would always mispronounce it. Her grandma called her "Goks" for short. She was pretty. She was fair-skinned and we both had the same hairstyle -- bob cut. We both sat in the front row in Mrs. Laguitan's class. We'd eat our snacks together during recess and she'd sometimes lend me her crayons when there are some colors missing in my box. We held hands a lot. She gave me a reason to look forward to going to school. We were together for just one school year. She transferred to another school when we were in first grade. I remember feeling sad because she was not in my class anymore and I couldn't find her anywhere. It's been 27 years and I'm still wondering what has happened since we parted ways. I've been running searches in Friendster, Google and other sites, but I can't find her name anywhere. Maybe she has gotten married and now has a different surname. Maybe she has gotten out of the country. I just wish I knew how she is now and what has happened to her in the years we apart. After all, she became a part of my life at one point. I just hope that fate would be kind enough to allow our paths to cross again.
