I just responded to the grandfather turning 100 post and it set me to thinking about my granddad. Papaw, as we called him, been dead for almost 20 years now but he lived a long and happy life. I remember listing to his stories and did he tell some good ones. My favorites were always the tales of when, as a young man, he worked on the railroad in the 1920's giving him the opportunity to travel up and down the east coast for free. In 1923 he saw Babe Ruth play in Yankee Stadium and in an instant became a life long Yankee fan. My grandmother would often tell stories of moving from North Carolina to Virgina in a covered wagon in 1911. She never did get use to those automobiles. She spoke of World War Two and how two of my uncles served in the U.S. Army with Uncle Ed in Italy and Uncle Paul in France, causing her many sleepless nights until they returned safely. Their stories were fascinating because they reflected living in another time and I was so glad I took time to listen to them. What is the most fascinating story that your grandparents have told?

My grandmother would tell me about World War II, would describe the fox hole they made. There was this one night when an air fight was going, her husband went out in the open to watch, and she kept calling for him get in for cover. He did so only because a tiny piece of metal actually hit him in the arm.

Oh my gosh, that must have been very frightening. Where did your grandparents live during World War Two?

The way my grandmother talked about it, it wasn't a serious wound. Leyte in the Philippines, where Gen. Douglas MacArthur landed.
