Father's Day Tribute

I know several of you have started discussions on Happy Father's day, but I wanted to do this anyway. I no longer have my father with me. . .only memories of him. Even though I was "Mama's girl" and stayed at the house helping her while my brother and sister helped my father in the fields, I still have very warm memories of the times spent with him. My father had a very dry sense of humor and I could never tell when he was serious and when he was joking, except times like when he came in from the barn and told my brother and I that our dog had puppies. We knocked each other over getting to the doghouse before we realized our dog was male. We were pretty young, but being raised on a farm we already knew males didn't have babies. We went sheepishly back into the house and were met with "April Fool" and a dry chuckle so characteristic of my father. I have always loved sharing this story with my children. Being a father doesn't come naturally any more than being a mother does. It's a learning process for the rest of your life. If you have more than one child, you find that each child demands different treatment of situations, so don't feel like you're just not cut out to be a father during the frustrating times, every parent has those feelings. If you're a new Dad or expecting to be a Dad for the first time, there's some help on what to expect and how some fathers have handled the new experience at http://www.first30days.com/being-a-new-dad/articles/youre-the-dad-now.html. If you're a Dad or have a Dad and have any advise or stories you'd like to share we'd all be glad to hear them.

My Father too passed away many years ago. Like you my Dad could play all kinds of tricks on me because i believed anything he said. My sister and i chased birds around the backyard for hours at a time one summer (i was about 4y/o) with a salt shaker because he told us if we put salt on the birds tail we could catch them. Now i think back on those tricks and just shake my head and laugh. And what makes it really bad is right up until he passed away when i was 30years old he could STILL convince me of ANYTHING!

Thanks for the best response. Isn't it amazing that even after you are old enough to question anyone else your Dad can STILL get you?
