You have gotten a mix of positive and negative reactions to the idea of reading the dictionary in order to learn English. I can see some positives and negatives as well. I am a native English speaker, so the way I that learned to speak English was that I grew up in an environment where I heard people around me speaking the language. As my own children have grown up learning to speak English, they have done so listening to their parents and repeating what we say; I affectionately refer to my daughter as a "repeater girl" - and that's how she's learns, by "repeating after me". Vocabulary and learning words out of the dictionary is important. You will use those words to communicate your thoughts, and the more words that you know, the more precisely your thoughts can be communicated. How much good it will do you to read a page and go on to the next one, though, depends on your ability to retain the information that you have read. You may want to pick a page and keep re-reading that page for a week or a month until you feel that you have mastered those words. You will want to use them in sentences - to communicate your thoughts. You may want to write them down and tape them up around the place where you live - so that you see your window, your television, your dog (good luck getting a word card to stick to your dog!) or your fish bowl or the food that you eat or any of these things - so that the continued exposure to these words continues to make a lasting impression in your mind. To improve your reading, you may want to get your hands on some basic children's books in English - maybe even English translations of books that are familiar to you in your native language - so that you can go back and forth and build up your familiarity with the words. :)

So... what kind of a dictionary are you reading? Are you working out of a Chinese-English dictionary, or an English-English dictionary? LOL... I once had a professor in college who spoke and wrote in at least four different languages, and as several of his students gathered together, they wondered which language the professor used when he was thinking to himself... I guess that until you have someone with whom to speak English, "yourself" is the best that you can do! :) Just don't let too many people catch you talking to yourself ;)

Simply reading the dictionary will not help you improve your vocabulary, you have to practice. Try using it in a sentence when you converse with other people. Don't be hard on yourself, just pick 3 to 5 words a day and try using it. Don't read a page at a time because chances are you will never retain these in memory. Of course unless you have a photographic memory.

It would be better if you read magzines and newspapers and whenever and wherever you find new words, you note them down and look for their meaning in the dictinary, this will help you a lot. Make a list of new words and its meanings and revise them often, it will help you memorise those new words. Simply reading a dictionary may not be of much use in improving your English. Best of Luck!

Oh, I admire your courage.I don't know whether or not you are chinese,it is indeed a big challange for chinese students, more than one of my classmates had the same idea like you but all of them failed at last.Maybe reading english dictionary is a good way to enlarge your vocabulary but that will cost your lots of time and energy, there are also many ways to improve your english.Certainly,if you have enough willpower, miracle will be achieved.

If you already finished it by now then well and good. It will be your stored knowledge and can be a ready reference when the need arises. But for me the best way to improve your vocabulary is thru constant reading. Though reading the dictionary is a great idea, but the retention or the memory of the meaning of certain words won't lasts long. You can entirely grasp the meaning of that particular word if you will always encounter it and how it is used in a sentence. You can only attain this if you read, read and read.

I think try reading books with content (as in e.g. novels) for a start, dictionary can serve better as a reference book and not a study book per se.
