How to check and repair bad sectors on a hard disk. Step1 Select My Computer. Step2 Under Hard Disk Drives highlight the the c:/ drive which you want to scan. right click it and choose Properties Step3 Open the Tools tab. You can choose the two options in the box to automatically fix file system errors and scan for and attempt to recover bad sectors. Click the Check Now... button. While the the program is checking you will notice it checks the disk in phases. Step4 In earlier version of Microsoft Windows and DOS, this functionality was built into the `scandisk` and `chkdsk` utilities. Once the bad sector or sectors have been "repaired", continue to back up your hard drive on a regular basis. Hard drives are mechanical devices and all mechanical devices will eventually fail.

thanks for the helpful tips mayankbhusan. although, in addition to your topic. chkdsk or scandisk will not actually repair bad sectors of harddisk, it will just hide and block the bad sector so it will not be use in the future. bad sectors are usually hardware in short it cannot be fix by software. on the other hand, some bad sectors that arent hardware fault can be repair using a specific software such as disk manager given by the harddisk manufacturer like Seagate Disk Manager.

Thanks mayank for sharing this. I would like you to start a discussion regarding 'how to go for a routine maintainance of your computer' like the scanning and degragmenting things. Thanks.
