Installing operating system

I want to insattl ArcGIS software in my laptop. i have installed it and it didn't work. i asked some freinds and they told me that this software has problem with vista OS. therefore i need to insatll windows xp operating system. Therefore i am asking you can i have two operating system on one drive and how can i do it.
