Some fuel for thought in your quest to save gas:
-Check your tire pressure regularly. You'll be safer and save gas at the same time.
-Brake and accelerate smoothly. You'll save up to 30% of your gas.
-Use cruise control on the highway to maintain a constant fuel-efficient speed.
-A roof rack increases drag. Remove it when it's not being used.
-Replace your air filter once a year. You'll get 10% better fuel economy.
-Don't idle at the curb. Turn off the engine instead.
Have you checked out www.terrapass.com? They fund renewable energy projects such as wind farms, agricultural projects in which farmers capture and destroy methane from animal manure, and landfill projects in which operators capture and destroy methane from decomposition.
Each of us can make a difference if we work toward the same goals.

Boy, I understand that. Thankfully we have been having mild weather here and it is comfortable to turn off the ignition with the windows down. But when it gets really hot again, I will probably be more likely to go inside to wait more often that waiting in the parking lot!

I know a lot of people are avoiding long distance vacation this year but if you're going on one, try driving behind big-rigs... Not tail gating but even from the safe distance, you can get between 3 - 5 miles more per gallon on some of the bigger engines & 5 - 8 more miles per gallon on some of the smaller engines, or smaller cars just by driving behind big 18 wheeler type trucks... I'm not quick 2 mile trip to a corner store but long term driving, typically more than 2 hour drive on highway... Every summer, I go down to ocean city, MD which is slightly over 3 hour drive from my house... One year, just for the heck of it, I drove down following big truck most of the way... On my way back home, I purposely avoided being stuck behind big trucks... I've noticed about 75 mile difference on my "trip millage" meter...

I've heard about that. But my understanding is that to be truly effective you have to be closer than six car lengths, which would put you out of the trucker's side mirror view. A dangerous spot.
I hope you will make sure that you can see the trucker's side mirrors, which means he can see you.
Stay safe out there!
