I want to start a vegetable garden. I live in Southern California in an area that hardly gets any rain. How much to water a vegetable garden in this area is my question? What time of day is better?

The amount of water you would need to use is something I don't know but can tell you that I've read it's not good to water at night. I water my outside flowers early in the morning. Not suppose to water the lawn either at night.

I'd suggest watering in the evenings or early mornings, so that the water has a chance to soak in and not just evaporate in the heat of the day. As to how much to water...there are a bunch of answers for that! I guess the easiest thing to do would be to watch the plants and see what they 'say'. If you notice a bit of a wilt, water them that evening. If the branches or stems are shriveled or soft, water them. You could also try sticking your finger an inch or two into the soil around the plant and seeing if it's very dry. Overwatering can be a problem, so it can be a tricky thing. Good luck with your weggies!
