The things that parents say to their children....

We've all heard them - "Don't run with the scissors - you'll put an eye out." or "Don't make me come up (or down) there." I remember my parents, especially my Dad, having certain things that he said - usually when we were misbehaving - that I have since caught myself saying to my children! "You took it, you eat it!" (at the table when you're not cleaning up your plate) or "Don't you know there are starving children in Africa?" (so you're going to send my leftovers to Africa?) What are some of the sayings that you recall your parents using as you were growing up?

My favorites, which I've caught myself using and cringed: "Stop crying, or I'll give you something to cry about." (that one never made sense to me when I was a kid. I was already crying, and felt I had a pretty good reason at the time to be doing so.) "Don't make me stop this car!" "You're bored? Well, I've got plenty of things that you can do. Start by cleaning your room." (We weren't bored very often as kids, as a result)

We learned at a very early age NEVER to say that we were bored! Some of the things your parents can come with for you to do when you say you're bored - let me tell you, when you live on the farm, they're not always pleasant! I cleaned out many a barn stall because I slipped and said that I was bored!

...that's so true. haha... they make a point that you could always start something around the house, and if you start cleaning, the house would look spotless in no time! =D

"What are some of the sayings that you recall your parents using as you were growing up?" Don't cook, you'll burn yourself. Don't cook, you'll burn the house down. Don't mess with my recipes. You can play/watch that media/gaming... but if you screw up... you're out! (insert the scariest stare I've ever seen here) I brought you to the world, I can easily take you out Hardhead = Soft"rear" I don't care how tall, strong or built you get... if I need to, I will do whatever it takes to take you down.

I've heard people say 'Shut your mouth and eat your dinner' (difficult) ; 'Do you want a smack?' - (sure, doesn't every kid?)

ONe of the most popular saying around here is "Because I said so!" or "I don't care if you want to do it, just do it anyway." This is one I have heard hundreds of times,"I'm the mother! You do what I tell you to do." There are others such as: "If you lie down with dogs, your going to get fleas" or "Life's not fair so just get over it."

Those are some good ones. I've caught myself using some of them, and I even have to laugh when I hear my two oldest children using them with their own children!

ahehe...mom always told me this: "Don't go where angels are afraid to go." I've always loved this qoute. It always tells me that I should be careful of the decisions I make, I should always steer away from bad things, as well as bad influence. Of course, I do make mistakes once or twice. I guess she doesn't know this, but everytime, I know something is not "right", this pops inside my head in a voice resembling hers. And I think about the situation before I decide. Before, I have a hard time saying "no" to my peers who would ask me to hang around...But now, I could turn them down without hurting their feelings, or tell them that I'll ask my mom first. =)
