Why Are My Mini-Blinds On The Lawn?

Yes. Good question indeed. Well let's see now. I hate dusty dirty vinyl mini-blinds. It is that time of year when it's very nice outside. I needed to clean them badly and the dusters etc that are sold aren't worth diddly squat to keep them clean. each summer I take them down making sure they are undone all the way. Lay them on the ;lawn to avoid scratches etc. Mix up a little liquid dishsoap. I use a soft bristled broom scrubbing the blinds. then hose them off to rinse then hang them on a clothesline or in my case on my cedar fence. Quick, easy, and they are now sparkling clean waiting to dry fully. Just my task for today. How do you clean your vinyl mini-blinds? HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I like miniblinds to be clean, although I dont know if I have cleaned mine recently. I'm usually on my lot lol. I guess I should check them to make sure they are not full of dust. I guess that might be why I'm always sneezing...ya think?

I use the swiffer dusters and that works well for me. I cannot life one of my blinds because it is so big and heavy. I could not imagine why your blinds where on the lawn what a catching title.

You're suppose to clean those things, hmmm! Actually mine is half down from my dog Sophie sticking her head through them to look outside. I bought a new one to replace it a couple of days ago and its still in the car. Maybe tomorrow I'll bring it in.... and who knows, maybe by the end of the month I'll put it up.

Buster ate the original one in the master bedroom and the large living room when we first got him. Now he knows better. At least he hasn't chewed them up since. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

hmmmmmmmm....never thought of cleaning them this way before. I've always tossed them whenever they got too dirty to vacuum clean. I'm going to have to try this method. Just will have to figure out where to hang them to dry since I have no clothes line or fence to hang them on. I just gave my fabric verticle blinds away that hung over my patio door because I didn't want to clean them. Besides, they were always in the way whenever I had to clean the door or sweep the floor. It's totally private out back so no need for them anyways.

I used to put the darn things in the bathtub and that never worked out well. There were always some slats that didn't get cleaned. Now I spray them with Windex while they're hanging up and dry them off with a paper towel. I do both sides. Then I pull them all the way open and wash off the window that was underneath.

I do the same thing. When we moved in here, though, the blinds in the kitchen were full of a greasy, icky mess, so those had to go into the bathtub for a good scrubbing. Since this place is so tiny, it didn't take long for the same thing to happen, though. I need to get them down and do them again.

I would put mine outside and spray them and scrub them and then high pressure rinse them off. High pressure as in the outside water turned on full blast and the sprayer on a good spray. Then I left them laying in a dry spot in the sun to dry out.

I use the nozzle on jet stream for rinsing but you have to be careful not to bend them from too much water pressure. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I either wipe them down while they are hanging up or take them and put them in the bathtub and scrub them..depending on how old they are.....I usually just buy new ones as I start with the cheapo charlies from walmart anyway!

They are really cheap aren't they. Most mine I got for free from my last job as a caretaker at a huge apartment complex maybe 15 years ago. I still have a couple in the boxes in the garage that I will use some day I think. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

When I had mini-blinds, I cleaned them the hard way. I would simply wipe them down and of course, that never does the job, right! So, I would take them down and drag them to the kitchen sink and try again. Of course, I would forget to dry properly and end up getting water all over the place. More mess for me to clean up. I'm glad to have switched to curtains! Be well!

Hi GRANDPA BOB! We used to have blinds before but replaced them with old fashioned curtains now. However, when we clean our blinds before, we do the same thing as you do. Spread them out in the lawn, scrub them with soft bristled brush, hose them and hang them on the clothesline. But it is really getting into my nerves since I have to clean them often because of our climate here. So much dust and dirt gets accumulated within just a week. So, to make my life easier, I got the curtains instead where i can just put them in the washing machine once in every two weeks. haha..Next time, I will discard the curtains too..so I will have less wash load. haha.. Take care and God bless!

Have heard of putting them in the bathtub to clean them off, but I would not have thought about laying them out on the lawn. I normally just dust mine every do often. We only have a few of them in the house. 2 actually.

I haven't done this, when the blinds are cleaned a duster or a damp cloth, but my question is : wouldn't you be afraid that the heat would cause the blind to start to turn a different color? I know that the sun can cause the blinds to fade if they are a different color, and if they are white then it can cause a brownish look to them and a nasty smell. This is also directed at TYC as i've seen she's (or he's) done the same thing.

I do the same as you, but I've never thought to do it outside! I usually soak mine in the bathtub for a little while, then scrub them with a soft bristled brush (which isn't easy since you can only open them up just so much in a bathtub), rinse and blot dry with a towel. Your method sounds SO much easier! I'm going to try it. Thank you for posting this odd little discussion. I know it's going to help me and probably a lot of others as well!

Hey hey you , I do the same thing each spring towards spring cleaning . A hose, dish soap, rage, but no broom . I hate dust too and all the dirt really does built up . Once a week a will take a clorox wipe to them and it does help much.

The soft bristled broom makes it easier as I don't have to bend down and it also dries very quickly in the sun. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

not a miniblind in my house when I was a kid, my sister had allergies to house dust and when we built the new house, we put in shades rather than blinds I don't have blinds now, too tough to clean

I used to hate that job so now I have vertical blinds instead and they are much easier to deal with! lol I wish I could do the louvre doors in my living room the way you do your mini blinds - they are a nightmare! Congrats on a job well done AGB! xxx

i usually soak them in the bathtub-then rinse them off with the handheld sprayer.i have a bar in there to hang them off of. you're so right about those dusters.they're worthless for cleaning those.

Yikes don't remind me...that's one of those delightfully BORING things I have to do as my blinds do look a bit tacky...LOL...I take down my blinds and wash them in the tub with warmish hot water a little sudsy, but also use baking soda that seems to get the grim off better..then rinse off and since I have clothes lines hanging up in the bathtub area let them dry a bit...while they are drying I usually wash the windows while I'm at it.

I usually just put mine in hot soapy water in the bathtub, but it is never easy to get between all of the slats doing it that way.. So some of them come out sparkling clean and others still have all of the original dirt on them.. I think now it is time to replace them as they are getting too old.. Have a great evening..

I (years ago) got rid of them because i HATED spending a day every week to clean them. And yes it was almost every week because we lived on a dirt road and my son has a lot of environmental allergies so it was more work than it was worth. Now i just take down the curtains slap them in the washer dry them and put them back up
