£9 ($20)per gallon - UK strike affecting big time!

The West Country of England has been affected big time by fuel shorages and the only garage with fuel decided to put its prices up! Is this fair? In my home town supplies have run out and also there are only for garage still with fuel int he nearest city. If you owned a shop would you cash in on this or would you continue selling at the usual price of £1.20 a litre. Please share your opinions. I need to get to work tomorrow with the diesel light on red. Ellie :D

Any gas relief in the air, ok maybe bad play on words at a bad time. pardon! lol Speaking of provisions for emergency this is an excellent idea I learned this from my grandma who had a store room full from floor to cielling it was like a small market, she was morman and a survivor of the depresion in the USA. I had always had the same thing for emegencies only on a smaller scale. Untill moving here to Mexico but things just dont keep as long here in the heat! But the one thing is the trees are always full of something to eat much more vegitation and this fish from the ocean are plentiful even though im not big on fish.

Hi Gollywog, I really don't know but this guy was taking the P a bit as he was the only garage in area to have. Our supplies I have been told should be back to 9 out of 10 garages having some fuel by this time tomorrow. Ellie :D

This is gross! How can one garage decide on itself! Isn't their any regulatory body that has a control over this? I am surprised!

Hi Mimipi, There doesn't seem to be but supllies are getting back through now and most garages are charing the £1.32 rate and I for one will not go to this particular one ever again for trying to be greedy in peoples time of need. Ellie :D

It is a common practice that when you have a short supply and more than your share of people demanding it that the price will go up. Not fair but that is the way it is. The rarer it is the more it is worth. I don't live in the UK but the USA and I know the stations around here where I live are losing money by selling gas. Most of them are independently owned and several have just closed down cause they can't afford it anymore.

I feel sorry for the independently owned garages as they are really struggling here too, but this guy hiking the price right up in this way is a fool to himself because as supplies come back people will not go to him in the future. Ellie :D

Ahhhhh what a heart touching discussion. Fuel prices, food prices are going rocket high and basic necessities are getting too much expensive globally that u can imagine. Worst part of it is that no one is sure as how to stop them and curtail them Back to ur discussion. if i own shop and things start getting running out, then for sure i wont get advantage of it and start black marketing, rather i will sell the stock at current prices on which i get them. I never like to get undue advantage of situation Take care

Hi Cupid that is refreshing to know that you wouldn't rip people off in this way. The strike is over so supllies should start filtering back through now and I for one will be boycotting this guys garage as he was really taking advantage of this crisis. Ellie :D

Firstly Ellie I am glad that you've posted this. We have no shortage here and I'll make sure that I top up before I come down. That of course is exactly what they don't want us to do. But I can't afford to be stuck with no petrol. I'd like to think that I wouldn't cash in on the shortage of fuel. I think that shows a mean spiritedness and is an act that might well rebound then the supply gets back to normal. I do think that we have to start doing some hard thinking about the supply of oil though. Apparently, whilst stocks are dwindling somewhat, there is oil there, but it is difficult to extract, to the point where it is uneconomical to do so. This means that the world price of oil increases with the knock on effect of higher prices. When this is compounded by the tanker drivers' strike, which is over I think, then the situation simply becomes much worse. I'd sooner ration supplies at the "usual" price I think. That way, everyone could at least get some fuel. But there will always be greedy customers too.

Hi P1kef1sh, I was going to email you this morning and get you to do that, no need now as you have read this, but now the strike is over it should start getting through to the fuel stations. This guy said his reason for charing £1.99 was because that way people would just put in what they needed rather than fill their tanks but to me I think he was taking the P as the ones that did have supplies were policing forecourts and allowing a max of £20 per person at usual price. My daughter managed to get some yesterday. Ellie :D

Thanks for thinking of me Ellie. Personally I would give that guy's petrol station a miss. But of course people won't. I am reminded of South West Trains whose excuse for increasing fares well above inflation was that they wanted to price people of the railway because too many were catching their trains! I thought that was why they are in business. Crazy World. See you tomorrow.

Hi P1kef1sh, oh yes I will definitely be boycotting this garage in the future and I think many will. I will bring the paper with me tomorrow so you can see just how bad it is to get fuel here at the moment. See you tomorrow, safe journey. Ellie :D

This is dreadful news Ellie. I hope I wouldn't be so callous as to raise prices but people do strange things when they are frightened an this situation sounds dire. My friend had the fuel depot here in our little village. He always charged what he paid plus a little bit of profit to run the business. He is very ethical like that. Sadly, he ran into financial difficulty and we have had no fuell here since last November. He intends to put it back on but I can't see it becoming a reality.

Oh MsTickle that is also sad to hear as it is the smaller people who own garages with fuel that are the most affected the big supermarkets have the monopoly now as they can bulk buy for cheaper prices. Lets put out some of our positivity to attract the fuel back into your town eh! Ellie :D

That is terrible $20 per gallon. The oil companies are making a huge profit and they don't care about the people.

I saw this on the news the other day(or was it earlier today) Ellie and was gobsmacked. We went to a supermarket in a nearby town on Sunday and the price of petrol went up 3p a litre whilst we were in there! I think it is diabolical that they are profiteering off of a situation like this, my other half has a 60 mile round trip to work every day ( he works awkward times and public transport is not an option) and it is getting quite awful! I just hope that we keep getting a supply here as we leave for our holiday on Saturday and we are driving to the Highlands! Hope you get to work okay - more importantly I hope you get back okay honey! xx

Hi Mummymo, you should be fine in Scotland and the strike is now over but our supllies came out of Plymouth and none were and this garage put it up to £1.99 a litre as he was the only one that had some, bit naughty eh! I should be fine for work and back as light comes on early and hopefully will be able to fill as usual Thursday. Have a wonderful holiday Mummymo. Ellie :D

Hi Mikeyswife, $20 per gallon not litre but still ridiculous in price. They are syaing that by this time tomorrow that 9 out of 10 stations should have some supllies back, I made it to work and back on vapours today I think. Crazy. Ellie :D

And dont they always just have to get too greedy. They should not be allowed to do it because it is wrong, they know people need the fuel and so will pay those costs it makes me mad. It is bad enough the prices rising as it is without shop owners cashing in on it too.

I've heard stories about petrol station owners cashing in on the fuel shortage by increasing prices. They may get more short term profit, but in the long term I think they'll find that their customers have long memories and will choose to go elsewhere.

omg that is horrid! i know when the prices here took a huge jump was when my hubbys work got the great idea of transferring him to a store that was an hour away even though within like ten miles there are like ten plus stores.. so gas is killing us!! but nothing like what you are dealing with though!! good luck!!

I personally think the UK govt should do something about the oil prices. These changes in oil prices are affecting everything and for us younger people it is getting harder and harder to keep up with all of these extra costs. In your case ellie I think you are unlucky and i feel sorry for you and I hope you get to work on time tommorrow.

Hi update, I made it to work and back, just in a little while ago and by tomorrow we have been told that in the West Country 9 out of 10 stations should have fuel. This guy charging these ridiculous prices will have lost a lot of customers by the time the supplies are back on and the price at most pumps now is still expensive but more realistic £1.33 per litre. Ellie :D

Hi Ellie-the price of fuel is absolutely ridiculous how people are meant to get to work is beyond me...where my son works there is no transport so he needs his car..how he manages to pay for the petrol I dont know but he does-yes sometimes he does ask me if I can help him so I normally give him something to get petrol-I know Gordon Brown is trying to stop people driving but he is the biggest hippocrite there is as he has two cars!!-hugs littleowl

Supply and demand! If I was the only supplier I might take 2 things into consideration. Will I be able 2 get more? If yes then I might cash in. If no, Id be looking to trade with some food producers so they might remember me when the price of food goes up and I have no cash to buy food. We all need to eat even if theres no gas...But id probubly raise I a bit for sure. The price is up to almost $5 A gallon I heard which is double than what it was a year ago. WOW this is unfathonable we are in for a big world change if so! Hold on tight and enjoy the ride or the walk. The govornment needs to step in as they do when there is a national disaster. Isnt his like one and dont you all pay taxes? I wonder whats in store for the rest of the world? Please keep us posted!

Hi David, yes ridiculous really. The strike is now over but because the maindepot that supplies the West Country was blocked from getting supplies out we got hit hard. This man was a bit naughty in rasing the price as much as he did because he was obviously a lot busier than usual being the only garage eh! Thanks for sharing your views on this. I have what I call a provisions cupboard where I keep dried egg powder and flour and pasta and dried potato, tinned products in case we are ever unable to get food.Ellie :D
