I have not tried the latest version, but I have used the prebious distribution of Ubuntu. It is a very decent operating system and well worth trying for most people, although I prefer mandriva myself.

i say this, with great sadness, i have been a debian lenny user for a long time, and it was very stable, i always used that version and i still have it installed on one of my laptops. 2 months ago, i had to switch to ubuntu, because i changed computers, my opinion: it sucks. sorry to say, but as you have said, many bugs, i have the latest heron, my microphone does not work, compiz works, but sometimes gives errors, it is also very slow. firefox was buggy before, now it seems they fixed it with the new updates. too bad ubuntu started to advance so fast, probably in the race with windows, it would be better for them to stay on track, because its becoming like it, buggy! that is why i switched from windows to linux, because windows was very buggy.

It seems to depend a lot on your hardware. I bought my hardware specifically to go with Linux. Ubuntu 8.04 has no given me many problems at all. I have had it since the first day that it went RC (Release Candidate). There are a couple of little problems that I have had, but nothing major. I have a friend who had horrible problems with 7.10. They all went away with 8.04, he loves it.

I was eager to try Linux, and as I have just replaced my computer, decided to install Linux on it and see what all the fuss is about. After reading several reviews I decided that I would give Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron a whirl. BIG MISTAKE. What a mess, Firefox kept freezing, the computer was running about a quarter the speed than it was under windows XP, and I thought that Linux was meant to be good on older computers. I then downloaded PCLinuxOS, and thought I would give this a try. Now this was a lot better, it ran faster, the KDE menu system felt easier to use. This success lasted for about a week when I started having problems downloading programs from the repositories. I had to re-install the whole thing 3 Times. After the Third time I was ready to throw in the towel, when I read that Mandriva had just lunched their spring 2008 version, and as PCLinuxOS was based on this I thought that I would give this one final try. SUCCESS !! So far, I seem to be winning. The PC now zips along faster than ever, the layout and file system is a pleasure to use, and overall I am really pleased with this package. Its just a shame that you have to persist to get anywhere with it all. This is the only downfall (besides the games side of things), is that things don't just start up out of the box, although I believe its getting better, it can still be off putting to Newbies.

I tried out hardy and it would not work with my wireless card (or atleast through ndiswrapper. i refuse to use the bcm43xx driver, mostly because it does not work as well). However, it worked fine in gusty and anything else before it.

I have been using ubuntu 8.04 for 2 months. It is fairly good. I don't know the difference between 7.10 and 8.04. They are almost the same. I haven't seen any bugs. I use virtualbox to run a windows XP in it. I can do everything well. I like it.

I just got Hardy Heron about a month ago, and i love it. Even though I had a difficult time to find a way to connect to my wireless connections via my Laptop, since I have a Atheros wireless card, but other than that I love it. I'm dual booting on my Toshiba Satellite a215-s4757 with Ubuntu and Vista, and I'm doing fine with it. :-) Good luck with your update
