My new discovery as an alternative to bread....

In trying to economize and watch my food budget and all, I came across this and made it up. Granted I might have read about it here, but not thought much of it but it stayed in my head, but however...I have been trying to do without bread. I don't do alot of sandwiches, I'd rather do crackers, cheese chunks and pickles, but crackers are up so high, bread is high so I found tortillas on sale - I love flour torts! Quesadillas especially!
I had the erge for pizza the other day and made my own crust with Bisquick so I had the makings and it just hit me to use a floour tortilla as the crust...but wasn't sure about it being soft - I like a crisp crust. But then thought about roll-ups....
So I spread pizza sauce on the tort - added mortzarella cheese and pepperoni - my favorte pizza toppings. I nuked it until the cheese melted and the rolled it up. I used the pizza cutter and cut the roll in to about 1 inch slices. I really wasn't that bad! Don't compare it to pizza as the crust being do different is a major difference that can't be compared, but a pizza roll up - it wasn't so bad!! Need to do some fine tuning to it as I think I had to much pizza sauce on it as it was running out of the ends and maybe do a "dam" of cheese at each end to hold it in, but bottome line, it wasn't to bad and a great way to save and economize when bread and crackers are so high. Also a great variety meal - also would be a good "finger sandwich" kind of party food!
Give it a try and add your fav toppings and let me know what you think or any tips on improving it!

Here the healthy tortillas are more expensive than bread. We usually buy our bread at discount anyway, but we have an electric tortilla maker and sometimes make our own fresh and healthy tortillas. I put freshly ground flax seed in mine along with the whole grains. They do make good wraps. My favorite wrap though, is romaine lettuce.

Tortilla maker? Tell me about that! I think I'd like to have one! Our local discount bakery closed so we are at the mercy of the sales at the market, but I can do without bread so no big deal for waiting for a sale

I have tortillas often, but never thought about using the pizza stuff on them. It sounds like a great idea:):)
WE usually make them with lots of different things, even just ham , cheese and lettuce sometimes - the kids used to love to take those to school.
HOwever they're kind of expensive here too. It's about 2 dollars something for a package with 10. I've been experimenting so I can make them myself and it works but those tortillas end up thicker than the ones I buy.

I've always loved them in mexican food, but few years ago my brother took me to lunch and I ordered a "wrap" - well, that is what htey are called at fast foods. But it was so good - turkey fined sliced, lettuce, tomatoes, just a turkey sandwich wrapped in a tortilla instad of on bread. It was so good. I have not been able to reproduce that same flavor, but i make my own and they are edible! Turkey is the only thing they are good on tho, I have tried ham and it just isn't the same! But I grind up london broil and make buritto meat and those are always good!

My kids actually like it with ham. THey also like it with chicken and turkey. I used to make it for them to take to school because it was practical. I would always get a few extra little packages of taco sauce whenever we went to taco bell and send them with the kids to school. They loved it LOL
We have burritos all the time, usually once a week. I love mexican food hehehehe

I didn't know that! Maybe I will give one of them a try and see the difference and improve mine!

I make tortilla wraps all the time. I especially like to make the ones with veggies and cream cheese, they are addicting.

I love flour tortillas, too! I still use bread for some things, but I've pretty much given up bread for sandwiches. If I want a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, I usually do a wrap. It's so much easier to eat, cuts calories, and you can eat and work or eat and run without having to worry about making as big a mess in the car or your book. I fold them like burritos (with the ends folded over the filling and then rolled up) so things don't fall out.
We've been doing this for a loooong time, and it's really great now with bread rising so much. Something about paying $4 for a loaf that was $1.79 a couple of months ago really gets to me!

Oh, I'm telling ya! It is getting high! I like bread and all, but nearly $4 a loaf - that is where we will have to part ways! Now PBJ, that has to be on soft white bread or I just won't bother...not like I can't live without it tho!!
