I use something I get from Drs. Fosters and Smiths. I think it's called OtiCleanse, but it's an ear conditioner and cleaner. Whenever my girl's ears get dirty, I take those cotton makeup rounds (kinda like a flattened cotton ball) and soak it in the stuff and gently massage her ear around it. Then I just wipe the earflap off and let her go and shake her head.

When I worked as a veterinary technician, we used a bulb syring (one of those blue squeezy things) and warm (not hot or cold) soapy water (mild soap) or a warm water and Betadine solution. Squeeze the solution gently straight down the ear canal and then massage the ear canal under the ear just above the jaw to squish it around and break up wax and junk. You can then wipe it out with a clean soft cloth or gauze - gently with two or three fingers.
Allow the dog to shake its head to get out excess or you can suck it up in the bulb syringe.

There is a product called I believe Oti-clear which is an ear cleaning solution. You can get it through any vet or vet supply company. I recommend Valley Vet, they have an online store and you can get it shipped to you. It's not real expensive, and works well. My mom uses it for her shih tzu
