My husband and I bought a bright orange, plaid interior 1975 VW Camper bus from this older "hippie" yesterday. It didn't pass the emmisions test this morning, but we know what needs to fix and it is a faily minor repair. I would like to know if anyone else out there has a VW bus and I would like to hear you stories and adventures that you have had in it.

I spent many happy days in our VW camper bus as a child. We lived in Panama Canal Zone when Daddy purchased it. The top would lift up for a cot the bench would fold down to a bed and if I remember correctly the seat from the rear chair would fit between the two front seats to make another bed. my brother and I loved how the seats had storage space under them. I recall our first camping trip in the VW it was to a remote place in Serapunta. There was a rushing creak with lots of rocks for the water to splash against. It rained relentlessly that first day and my father was grilling hamburgers while trying to hold a rain coat over the grill. my mother complained that she wished we had a canopy at which point my father promptly passed her the tin can we had been using as a toilet and said "here you go, a can o' pee" The burgers were soggy and we were all cramped into the van but the memory is marvelous. my mother taught my brother and I how to play 20 questions that night. the next day was lovely and when we arrived home we learned that a tornado had gone through and many homes were missing their roofs, we only had a window blown through. We used that van to travel up through central america back to the states, all the locals would point at us and cry hip py hip py. We kept a porta potty under the seat in the back, which was a big improvement over the "can o' pee" back in the states and several years later I grew embarrassed of our hippy mobile and if my father drove me to school he would lovingly comply to my wishes to be dropped off a few blocks away from the school building. The van was eventually sold and I missed it. I missed the pump sink and pop up tables with little spice rack. I miss the plaid curtains and vinyl seat covers. But, most of all I miss the good times that were had in that reliable old bus.

Thank you so much for that memory. We have two small boys of our own and we are also foster parents, so we have many children in and out of our house. My kids are estatic to take it camping. I told my husband I wanted to keep it orange and paint flowers and peace signs all over it! He's not so sure on that one! Thanks again for sharing!
