Why Dont Grocery Stores Charges For Plastic Bags Instead Of Reusable Bags?

I don't understand this.... The grocery store that I do my weekly shopping at charges $0.99 for a reusable recycled bag but yet when I get to the register the cashier is trained to say "Is plastic ok?" No, plastic is not ok! I purchased 6 of their reusable recycled bags a long time ago and bring them with me every time I do my grocery shopping. Here is a concept: Instead of charging $0.99 for a reusable recycled bag, why not make the reusable recycled bags mandatory by a set cut off date, notifying their customers well in advance so they can transition and prepare. After the cut off date, if you do not use the reusable recycled bags for bagging your groceries, then charge the customer $0.99 for the plastic bag! I am positive it would not sit well with anyone to have to pay almost a dollar for a flimsy plastic bag that they will probably just throw away anyways! Does this make sense to anyone else?

Sounds good to me..bring a bag or be charged for one! Ireland (the Republic) has had a charge for a bag policy a few years now..I think it's about €5cent..We don't,in Northern Ireland...same deal as You-buy a recyclable bag, bring your own,or get free flimsy ones at the checkout..There's a couple of German Chains moving in to Ireland-the One Local to Me ,LIDL,encourages customers to take the product packing cartons to load your groceries into..they're not dumping so much packaging, and customers don't have to buy new carrier bags each time..

That is a VERY good point. It would definitely encourage people to be greener if you had to pay for the plastic instead of the reusable bags!
