in our place saying no to an invitation to be a god-father of a child is rudeness. so when invited we always say yes no matter how we oppose the idea of being the god-parents.
i just don't know the custom in other place and if they also practice this thing during baptism.
just for the record, ifever you are in a situation where you are invited to be a god-parent and you really don't like, will you say no? or will you just agree so as to avoid misunderstanding.

Hi there djmarion, I also don't have the courage to say no when I will be asked and I have experience this 2 times. I didn't like but I can't refuse or else I will be creating some misunderstanding...I also wish people will learn how to wait for those who will volunteer! LOL!

It is said that it will bring bad luck to say no when asked to be a god parent... so people just say yes... even if they do not want to... in my case i tell my friends beforehand that i want to be the god mother of their second child... that way they wont ask me immediately... and when my friend is pregnant for the second time around... i am already prepared to be a god mother again...

Hello, marion!I am from India.here also we have this tradition.I was offered this opportunity some fifteen years back.the parents of a girl child asked us to be God parents of their child and we gladly accepted.the child is now grown up and studying in standard 10th.we both the families have decided to arrange a suitable candidate for her marriage soon after her graduation.there is no misunderstanding between the two families.thanx.
