College tuition

United States

Not sure if anyone can send me in the right direction, but here goes. I was recently at a party when a lady came up to me and started asking me questions about my husband. He was in a boating accident when he was 5 and lost his leg. He doesn't use a prostheses just his handy crutches and massive upper body. He's 46 now and doesn't even remember the accident. But this lady was telling me that my daughter's college tuition could be paid for completely because of my husband's leg (for lack of a better phrase). My daughter graduates high school next year and is planning on becoming a nurse. Any idea who I could approach in getting help for her tuition. We barely make ends meet now and college can only happen for her by scholarships. Any help on where to go would be appreciated.

First of all, I would hope that you filled out the FAFSFA (financial aid form) before March 10 (or another date for some states). Is your husband on Social Security Disability? You could check with them. Contact the financial aid office of the college she will attend.

Thanks for your response. I was aware of FAFSA and have checked that out. My husband was turned down for disability because he was told he could be trained to do other jobs. Which stinks because his "crazy" sister is on full disability and likes to throw it in his face. I will contact the financial aid office at her college though. I had not even thought to go there. Thanks again for your help.

You are welcome. The reason I said on the FAFSFA a deadline of March 10 or whatever for your state, there is a cutoff date to receive state grants. I hadn't known about the cutoff date at first and had to wait a year before I could get the state grant. (RULE OF THUMB: FILE YOUR FEDERAL & STATE TAXES EARLY AND DO YOUR FAFSFA AT THE SAME TIME!!) I am not sure of a cutoff date for fall, but you may have missed it, but might be okay for spring semester. Again, check with the financial aid office. They will help you with questions regarding any financial aid, including FAFSFA. Maybe there is a needs-based scholarship available -- or one that fits your family's situation. If your child starts college this fall, it is getting awfully late to find financial aid and scholarships. She might have to delay a semester or even a year to get that all in line. I just want to impress upon you now that time is running out. She might still be able to get a student loan which she won't have to pay until a few months after graduation. Or you can get a parent loan, but that you start paying on right away. Again --financial aid office -- they'll answer questions.

Thanks! She is going to be a senior this fall. So we have a little time but I don't want to wait until the last minute to find all this out. So I will be checking with the financial aid office at the college she plans on attending. Thanks so much for sending me in that direction.
