Infected tooth....should I have extracted???

I was recently advised that I have a tooth that has gotten infected and is abcessed. I woke up a few days ago and my entire face was swollen from the infection. I was put on antibiotics and pain pills but need to decide if I should get it pulled or what. I do not have insurance so I cant get a root canal or anything expensive done. Has anyone else had this problem? What did you do?

Hi as painful as an abscess is and the fact you look like a hamster for a few days once the infection has gone the tooth itself may be fine, so I would wait and see before having it extracted. I had an abcess myself a few years ago and on Christmas day of all days and I still have my tooth. I hope you feel better soon. Ellie :D

hi!. what is that? a front tooth? if it is,you better ask for root canal treatment. but of course your dentist should assess first with the condition of your teeth and other tissues involved. have an antibiotic and drink it with its proper time, coz time matters a lot.just like for example, its written there that you should drink it every 8 hrs.you follow it,coz if not,the bacteria will be resistant for whatever medication you are taking, especially meds for infection.(a 3times a day habit of drinking meds is not good,it should be done by hours) as much as possible, save the tooth, have it RCT..

I went to the dentist and they cant pull it out yet anyway. They said they have to wait until I am finsihed with the antibiotic. It is not a front tooth though it is towards the back so I dont think it will be visible. Hopefully next week I can do something with this tooth though I am sick of being in pain.

If it is infected and that infection gets into your blood it would make you very ill or even kill you. Tooth infections are nothing to play around with, even if you need to find a training college or an ER I would get it taken care of sooner rather than later.

The ER is the one that gave me the antibiotics yesterday and I have been taking them since. I found a local clinc that will do it for a low cost and I may go get it done. I am just not sure if I have been on the antibitoics long enough. Someone told me that they cant pull it if it is infected.

I am sorry about your tooth. I hope that it's not really causing you much trouble. Have you consulted with your dentist yet? If so, what did your dentist advised you to do? I don't think that taking painkillers would be enough. Otherwise, you'll just end up taking medicines everytime you feel uncomfortable. I have had this problem before and my dentist advised me to get a root canal. Well, I did and I felt better.

I cant afford a root canal or that is what I would have done also. I am just taking the pain pills until I can get in for a clinic to take care of it for me. I dont have a regualr dentisit.

You have to get it extracted. It can lead to blood infections and you could end up in the hospital. I had one of those once and they gave me the antibiotic and pain pills. That helped for a bit but then the infection came back. I had no choice to get it pulled when I started running a 103 fever. I would try to come up with the money to get it extracted.

Thank you for the info....I think I am just going to go through with it...I found a place that will do it fairly cheap.

Yikes! Dental infection can be super dangerous, so you should get it treated as soon as you can. If there are any dental schools in your area, they'll do the procedures at a greatly reduced cost, which might allow you to afford a root canal. I just had an abscess and they had to yank the tooth completely. A root canal wasn't a good option because the infection had started to attack my jaw bone. Get it yanked, if you have to, or you could end up getting sicker. Not to mention being miserable while it's still in. Good luck and I hope you're feeling better soon!

We do have IU school of dentistry but it takes about a month to get in there because they stay so busy. How did you find out it had attacked your jaw bone? x-Ray?

I have had this problem before. The last tooth I had extracted was infected and abcessed so bad that my face was swollen and I was in so much pain. Like you, I have no insurance, so I just had it removed. Before I am forty I will probably have a mouth full of fake teeth as my teeth are bad no matter how much I take care of them.

If you can't have a root canal, PLEASE have it out as soon as possible, dawnmiller! Infections from teeth can get into your blood stream and make you very ill. If you have antibiotics, that's good and will kill the infection - but you will still have to decide whether to have it treated or extracted. If it's right at the back of your mouth, it would be best to have it out! Good luck!
