It is such a shame that the teenage girls in gloucester, Mass, decided to form a pack and all get pregnant together. They are just 15 years old. I saw it on the news tonight, one woman said, they are acting as a bunch of girls who all decided to go out and get their ears pierced together, with no more thought than that. Another said they cannot even afford to buy their own cigarettes but they all going to have babies. The school where they go is going to look into it, the authorities are not sure if it is the media with movies like knocked up and britney spears 17 year old sister being pregnant, or if this is something that is going on that is much more serious than that. http://www.wrcbtv.com/Global/story.asp?S=8531375 what do you think of all of this?

It's terrible that girls are doing this these days. I think it could be the media. Movies are getting way more harsh then they used to be and even television has a lot of shows that have teenage pregnancy. It amazes me how some girls allow themselves to become mothers before they even have a job, steady boyfriend, or completed school...

I think for them it is just a big dream, not the real thing but as soon they find out it is too late the baby is already here.

I heard about this on the radio and was floored... But at the same time, it sounds like those girls are completely disconnected from their families and are trying to find some kind of support by forming a group of friends and a substitute family. For young girls to form a group and a so-called pact to get pregnant together, regardless of being able or not to care for and support their offspring is the sure sign something is terribly wrong in our society. I don't think the film "Juno" is glamourizing teenage pregnancy or is to blame for those girls' behaviour. Their own parents didn't seem to have a clue about all this. And what about their boyfriends who 'impregnated' them?!?! Isn't it a total lack of care and responsibility on their part?

teenagers do what their friends do at that age they don't care what their parents say, their friends are the most important things in their lives, too bad their friends were doing something good like wanting an education.

Teenagers will never do what their parents tell them: I know for certain that I wasn't particularly obedient as a teenager. When I said those girls are disconnected from their family, I meant they might be alienated from their parents and are looking for a substitute family, in this case the group of friends they are involved in... Even if it means taking wrong decisions.

I think the parents need to give these girls a good talking to...It boggles my mind how teenage girls like that think having babies at their age is fun, cool and like buying the latest fashion trend.. In fact it actually INFURIATES me...Having that sort of attitude and treating this like a game just PROVES IMO that these girls have NO CLUE about the reality of bringing a child into the world...Its disgusting and I think that the parents/caregivers need to get a handle on it QUICK..

they should have given the good talking too, long before now, I think. But yes for the others girls that are not pregnant yet, they need a good talking to as well.

As TIME reported this week, 17 girls at the high school have become pregnant this year, with half of them sophomores who had entered into a pregnancy pact. All but one of the seven or eight girls who set out to become pregnant are 15 years old; the other is 16. Most got pregnant by their boyfriends, but one father is reportedly a 24-year-old homeless man. but one father is reportedly a 24-year-old homeless man WHAT?! OMG THATS INSANE!! NOT TO MENTION completely CARELESS, DANGEROUS, STUPID and the list goes on.... I am FLOORED...

Lets hope this is not a trend! I have a 14 year old and many of her friends have been sexually active since 12. Its really kind of sad. They are still little girls. I read about this story in the paper and it made me sick and sad. It sounded to me as if they were looking for someone or something to love. It sounded as if they came from homes where the parents were not really there for them. It's sad for everyone involved....especially the poor innocent little babies.

you need the nail on the head, that is the theory behind teenage pregnancy, looking for love, feeling unloved, thinking a baby will love them.

I saw this on the news last night and I found it quite shocking, but funnily enough they said that it could possibly be down to movies, and one of them they mentioned was "Juno". When this film first came out my hubbys niece went to see it and when I found out what it was about I said that films like that would glamorise young girls views on being pregnant at a young age. They are daft, I was 18 when I had my first and it was so hard. I have never had my own life because of it, no career and shunned for years for being a single parent I think it is sad for them all.

I never saw the movie but I absolutely agree with you on this one, movies, celebrities, icons, all have a big influence on teenagers even more than parents at that age.

That was just about one of the stupidest things that a teen could or would ever do.. They don't have an iota of sense nor do they have any inkling of what it takes to raise a child.. It will be so much more trouble for the parents because they will be the ones raising the children..

that is exactly what a teenager is child in a mature body, they do not have enough sense yet to run their own lives let alone raise a child.

I think that speculating as to why these girls would do this is silly. To say that they want unconditional love, well DUH and I think that they just think how fun it would be to have a baby, I know that when I was 15 although I did not want to have my own baby, babies were truly cute. If they are seeing others doing it and know it is okay then why not. It is sad that the parents had no clue as to what was going on and frankly the gal that is 18 with the 3 year old...what an idiot

how do you propose we have a discussion if we don't speculate, this is what this site is for, speculating is the starting point for the professionals to get some ideas as to what is going on and then they try to get down to the bottom of it. Which often times confirms their speculations

Well ther is also the movie Juno that made it seem okay to be having a baby and everything worked out in the end well these girls were silly for doing this they are way to young to be mothers and still be able to finish scool maybe that could be a reason they want ot be homescooled. I wonder what the parents are doing? Maybe they figured it would make them adults or something I wonder how many will be up for adoption. You can truly tell these girls don't know what they are really doing bringing a child into this world with them being so young themselves. It is hard enough to survive alone now they will have to figure out where the money is going to come from for food,diapers.. if I was these kids parents I would seriously make them work for the money to suppor their children. My niece was almost 14 when she had her and she loves her daughter but wishes alot that she had waited for she would appreciate the experience of being a mom alot more.

I think most of the girls will end up on welfare, it is a crying shame that it could not have been prevented.

That is such a shame!! I haven't heard of this but then again with all that's been going on with me, I haven't had time to watch tv. These poor girls need some guidance and it seems they're not getting it. What a sad sad shame. I pray none of them succeed in doing this until they're old enough to accept the responsibility for it's a huge one to take on and definetely not for kids.

well rose it is a shame that they really did not stop and think about it,what their lives would be like etc.i wonder what triggered them off.if it was here in australia, they get a baby bonus of about $4,000 ,maybe more now, and that started a wave of young girls getting pregnant here,$4,000 does not go far when you are raising a child.cheers sue

they will soon learn a hard lesson in life that no amount of money they can get will be enough to raise a baby, young and out of wedlock like that.

parents are not the cause for everything happening in the world, you know I am tired of everyone blaming parents, in north america you can beat your head against the wall trying to teach your teen the right way of doing things, and they do it the wrong way just to spite you.

that is really crazy. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the movies but just kids who are lonely and bored. You would think these girls would have better sense, but I guess not!

yep that is a major psychological theory about teenage pregnancies, lonely bored, feeling unloved, thinking baby would love you, have all been cited as reason girls so young get pregnant.

These young girls are clueless. Making a pact to have your kids together is one thing, but doing it at such a young age, no job experience and no income is beyond ridiculous.

I think that this type of thing is happening more often and that their parents should figure out or rather discuss with thier daughters why does they really want to have a baby and see if it's a fixable problem because alot of the time it's having someone to love and who loves them unconditionally I know I was one of those girls I have two boys and one on the way but I waited just a couple years longer than they are

It is appaling that girls would treat this as a matter of fact thing. They can not afford to take care of a baby. They are not mature enough themselves to mange having a child and caring for them. Having a child is not a game you play and then ups find you don't want to participate any longer. You have a baby with feelings, needs, and a life to support. How dare they just use a baby for their fun and games. This is a shame and the parents that allow this to happen, well it's a travesty. They need to take all of these girls and put them in a place to care for babies for a few days each. No one enterferring unless they just have to because they aren't taking care of the babies needs. Make them do everything and do it right. I don't know that the doll they use for this will work as well as making them care for a real baby.

parents sometimes cannot stop them, as a parent you teach your kids what is right and wrong, you give curfews and rules, and if the kids want they will still sneak around and do what they want to do,

This is very true. But there are parents that just let their kids do whatever they want to do and they don't now what they are doing most of the time.

I saw that on the news and could not believe that kids these days can do something do downright dumb. My son was a lazy student, as a result in 3rd year of math in high school was not the more challenging regents course but a mix of the regents math with a reality math education. The reality math education involved things like calculating sq feet of carpeting, how much paint to buy, how much wallpaper and budgeting. They had to calculate the salaries of the jobs they hope to get and then work that into things like rent, car payments, food, gas and several of them realized they would have less money then they do as students in high school. When they worked a baby into the mix - diapers, food, clothing - they were shocked. Maybe this type of math should start in middle school. Next, these kids need to learn about responsibility of a kid. All of them should be required to learn about child care, nutrition etc. Maybe they should be required to do volunteer babysitting for some community event. A 10 hour volunteer a month for a school year, while maybe in 7th or 8th grade should teach them what it is like to deal with a crying child and how that will cut into their free time.

I read it in the papers as well. I was at a loss for words. I meant, at that age, there is so many things one can do to pass time. Why choose to get pregnant? They think this is a fun thing to do? What are they teaching kids these days in school? Do they not inculcate values and responsibilities that goes behind a pregnancy? Sheez~~~!

Well, the kids of this generation really is different from the us when we were their age growing up. They do not seem to value their chastity as much. And to think they are happy to be pregnant at their age. The financial strain alone is something that will stressed them out. Let alone having to take care of a crying child who need constant care and concern. Sigh... are the generations of people deteriorating as times goes by?

It is a really horrid to see this kind of weird and disgusting news. To expect the school authorities to extend a strict vigil on the pupils is not really possible. And certainly then the faulty finger then turns to their parents.. How can the parents keep a strict control over the girls or boys. See 15 years is not an age where one can't understand the life. Certainly the students ,must adhere to the own disciplines and standards.. keeping in view the welfare of the family members.. How can one get involved in these, if they have a strong WILL and determination. And another thing that i could point out is that, including parents, people tend to be more self centered.. and selfish..never care about others.. or even think of a second.. what will be actions of them have an impact on the family and the society.. This is an unending debate.. and thanks again friend for giving yet another quality discussion. Take care.

That's why their are parents and families, to take the leading role, and teach them. If they don't do so, is their problem; That's what wrong with this World. Kids having babies, isn't acceptable; they not even know how to sustain or take care of themself. All this group of shameless parents, should go to Jail, the same with the boys, who get pregnat all this little nonsense girls; also they should be held accountable for the girls and the babies as well. If this other group of misleading boys, think is funny, let them know at this moment; is your child and and your girl, so get work; and forget about me having to sustain, yours and her stupid ways.

Yes that's the problem, there are always excuses for parents; not do what they suposed to do. That suposed to be your and others parents primoral job, Teaching your own chidren and others, the right things to do. Society has part of fault; but is yours, you are part of it.
