Sometimes I get tired of all this serious political talk and want to discuss something completely free of substance or meaning, some very light "fluff" - so, let's discuss that great movie genre - Chick Flicks! When did that phrase come to be anyway? It just seemed to me like from out of nowhere I started hearing it all the time and I never actually knew when it started or who started it.
Come on, chicks (I actually hate being called that myself...lol) and guys too. What are your favorite chick flicks? What makes a movie a "chick flick" in your eyes? Do you prefer watching them with your partner or with a friend or alone - or does it even matter because you just like to totally lose yourself in the movie? Does a movie count as a chick flick even if it came out before there were chick flicks?

I guess any movie that is primarily about women, or "fluffy" or sentimental might be considered a chick flick...even something like Titanic might be considered one. My all time favorite chick flicks? The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, Thelma and Louise, Steel Magnolias, and A League of Their Own--each one of those gets me grabbing for the tissues.

My goodness..you never heard of that movie..for shame..LOL
It's got a real stellar spectacular cast in it...Sandra Bullock as SiddaLee Walker, Ellen Burstyn as her mother Vivi, Maggie Smith, and oh my a whole bunch of others
It's basically in a nutshell the turbulent relationship between mother and daughter...mmm sounds familiar..LOL
I often had compared the relationship between my mother and I with this movie..no it wasn't as traumatic, but was dramatic..LOL...One of my favorite lines is "I owe all my creativity to her...If I had an easy childhood I would have nothing to write about."
I actually found a few YouTube clips from the movie

I'm a little slow, but I can't resist! There are some great movies listed here already. I loved Terms of Endearment, An Officer and a Gentleman, Untamed Heart, Some Kind of Wonderful, Pretty in Pink, Benny and Joon, and most recently, Juno. I don't love every chick flick though. Some just don't do it for me. They absolutely have to tug my heart strings! I'll probably keep remembering more. This is a fun discussion!

The basic definition of a chick flick is any movie where there isn't any violence and the story is a love story. Usually the story has either a happy Hollywood, they all lived happily ever after ending or it has a heartbreaking, three boxes of tissues ending.Chick Flicks Must have a good story and no gadgets or toys. So the two types of Chick Flicks, one is the romantic comedy of today. You know the boy meets girl.Boy gets on girl's nerves. They fall in love. Boy loses girl. Boy gets cute and smart and gets girl back. The other is the romantic epic. The tragic love story. There once was a third type, The true romantic comedy. A movie which is half comedy and half romance.I have a couple of those I really liked. One was Moonstruck. The other was Cousins.I like the tragic love story over today's romantic comedies. In fact just watching the promos makes me homicidal. I rather see a good action flick. To answer your question, yes there are many films that can be considered a chick flick that came out way before the term. The one that comes to me is The Women 1939. I just found out that there is a remake of this film scheduled for a September release.Gone With The Wind is a chick flick.Do you like Chick Flicks?

I LOVE chick flicks! You're so right about Gone With the Wind, the ultimate Chick Flick. I've had friends say already about different movies from this genre that they're pure fluff, totally predictable, ya-da-ya-da. I say, and your point is...lol! I know, some are better made than others, some are less predictable than others and some of the truly GREAT ones are unpredictable, but it's not all about predictability but rather how they get to the end, predictable or not.
That's not to say I'll watch just any Chick Flick; some are poorly done and seem to have been thrown together in about the time it takes to watch them, but there are so many that I've loved and I'm not ashamed or embarrassed to admit it no matter what the critics say. If they make me laugh and/or cry - both is really good - and make me care about the characters and root either for or against them, to me that's a good movie and serves its purpose.

My favorite "chick flick" has to be Once. It's a great unpredictable story. I just love it.
I would have to say a chick flick would be a movie that appeals more to women than men. But men usually suffer through hoping to get a little nookie when it's over and they usually do. LOL
I don't mind watching it alone or with anyone. I wish I had the time to even watch a movie, I'm working too much and too tired lately.

I don't want to spoil it for you. But it's a story set in Ireland about a heart broken struggling musician and a girl he meets while playing on the street. The whole thing plays out and she helps him with a record and I can't tell you anything else because I'll give it away. LOL...It's a really nice story. The 2 lead characters are just perfect. The ending is unpredictable. I love it!

There's an old Sarah Jessica Parker flick called Girls Just Want to Have Fun... it's so out-dated, but it's still a lot of fun.

chick flicks are basically categorizing the sappy whiny made to be tear jerker women overpowering men sort of films. the kind most stereotypical females would rather see over the action dramas stereotypical males would rather watch. even though im a chick.. i dont prefer chick flicks. i find them rather droll and boring and would much rather watch a fight, car chase, shoot em up blow em up movie. suspense, action, psychological thrillers and comedies are my faves.. but in the chick flick category, id hafta say Serendipity is my all time favorite with John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale.

I'm tired of the politics too. Chick flicks is a great segue, lol. I'm not sure when that genre title came about. But it caught on at a time when films were written with females as the main character in fluffy or dramatic roles. There's another term I know that moving around Hollywood and it's called Chic Lit. It basically means chick literature (The Hours, Legally Blonde, etc). I really like While You Were Sleeping and Fried Green Tomatoes, which is the ultimate chick flick. To me, a chick flick means what I had described above. But I think true chick flicks are the overly fluffy ones. There may have been many chick flicks back in the day, but you know with society today, everything needs a label.

I think the first movie I heard referred to as a chick flick may have been Beaches. There have been many movies since that have been given that label, some tearjerkers like Beaches and also many of the romantic comedy types. I love them all! I love a good laugh or a good cry when I watch a movie, sometimes both from the same movie! It seems that many chick flicks don't get great reviews from the critics, but what do they know anyway? I'm not really sure what critics are looking for when they watch a movie, but for me it's usually pure escapism.

I like to watch chick flicks alone preferrably, that way if its something thats gonna make me cry, I can let a good cry out without anyone making fun of me for crying.
One of my all time favorite chick flick movies is Dirty Dancing. I have loved that movie since I was a little girl. I never get tired of watching it!

I consider a Chick Flick to be any movie that a girl could potentially cry at but really just have a good time with! It doesn't really matter who I watch them, just as long as I get to watch! And my favorite is probably The Notebook or Wimbeldon!
