How do you make homemade car freshener

I brought a couple car air freshener at Walmart recently, it smell really great for a few days then no scent. I tried potpourri in the past with no success. I would like to make my own to save money, and would like something that's going to last more than a week. Have anyone ever made a car air freshener? What products did you use? How long did it last?

The only one that I can think of would be to use Potpourri and put, fragrances in that smell sweet. Use an old moth ball closet handle..

I don't know how long it lasts, but I've heard of people putting fabric softener dryer sheets under the seats of their car. I don't use dryer sheets so have never tried it. Even if you have to replace it every week, it would be fairly inexpensive.
