Being away from your hometown and loved ones really suck! If you are not from a developed country, chances are you would decide to go and work abroad. better yet, immigrate to a developed country that provides better and equal job opportunities. I decided for the latter. I am now a landed immigrant in Canada. I have been here since April of 2008. I like it here, everything is great. My experiences are above expectations. The only problem is the emptiness or loneliness that I feel when the thought of my wife and kids comes to mind. No matter how i stay focused on working, there would be times when I can't help but think of them specially during weekends and I see a happy family at shopping malls and parks.
How easy it could it have been if there is a switch you ca use to turn this feeling off.
Has anyone experienced this? Any advices?
Just Me,
SFC

I know how you feel. I am also an immigrant and living away from you family for the first time is really painful. Yes, I agree the you should busy yourself every day. Try to do things that would make you busy to think about home. When I got busy doing many things, I just forget about my home and my family and friends. I make them as inspiration why I am here. so,
keep yourself busy.. and remember.. days are passing by too fast. You just don't realize that your contract is already over and you can be home with them.
Good luck..

I went to another country to study for almost two years. I was 16 then, so of coursed I missed my family and friends. What I did was distract myself, kept myself busy so that I wouldn't have time to think about the people I've left behind.

You've only been away for not too long. Just think that you are there working for your family's future. I see my husband in you. He's working too in Canada. In his first months there, He had a hard time to adjust. Because it's the first time that we will not be together. What we did is, we send text messages and call each other everyday. Then he saved money to buy laptop for both of us. And now, we see and talk each other before he goes to work and after his duty. In that way, he will not feel homesick. Good luck to you. Hope to see you there next year when my whole family will be migrating there in Canada. HUGZ!

I had been away from my dear family, since I turned eighteen I only see them once every year. Sometimes I tried so hard to see them more than once in a year. Yes I know how it feels like being away with our loved ones specially far from our hometown, because whenever we misses them we can't just walk or get a taxi to go. Because you need to be on the plane and it takes a lot of money just to go home and see them. At first it was really difficult for me I had to suffer too much, now I am trying to adjust myself and still call them everyday and chat with them online.

i truly understand your feeling. i also went abroad for half a month before. for the first few days, everything was fresh to me. and i were curious about the foreigh scene, culture and people. so, i did not feel alone and miss home at first. but after a few days, i was so missed my home.
after that experience, i do not think that i am fitful to work or study abroad. but traveling abroad for a few days is quite ok and i like it.

I have experienced being away from home but I'm with my family. The longest time during a field trip that i'm away was two days.
