The problem with raising the minimum wage is that it makes each employer look at each employee and decide, are they worth that amount or not. If they are not, they will be fired, if they are, they will get a raise, but the business will be less profitable which has a trickle down on all the employees.
So who gets fired first. The first ones to go are the high school students. You know, the ones working summer jobs trying to earn a little extra cash. They are largely dispensable. Already with minimum wage increases set for July and more on the Horizon, kids are having trouble finding work. Next to go are the mercy hires. You know who I am talking about, those guys bagging your groceries, who obviously have some sort of disorder, and it takes them forever to bag your stuff, but everyone is okay with it, because at least they are employed and productive.
If you raise the minimum wage, your grocery may decide, that instead of leaving two lanes open with a checker and a bagger at each one, they may leave only one lane open. Or they may leave both open but only have 1 bsgger for the two lanes. Or they may just jack up the price of your groceries.
The other people this affects are the managers etc. If suddenly an employer has to give all its lower wage earners a larger raise than expected, then they may have to pass up the raises for their more productive workers. Or worst case, they may decide that they can fire one $15/hour worker so they can afford to pay all their $7.50/hour workers $9.50/hour instead.
Other soulutions include mechanizing jobs (see RedBox and self scan) or shipping jobs over sees (think cusomer service phone lines) All of these are ways around having to hire workers at rates you can't afford.
Put simply, when minimum wages go up, so does unemployment. It is that simple.

Nope, a lot of employers are abusing the minimum wage law and paying their employees the minimum but letting them work longer hours. Many more will abuse their employees if they are allowed to control to wages.

I think the minimum wage should be higher. It's going up in July, but it still won't be enough to live on.

I think the minimum wage should be at least $10 an hour.In this day and age, people can't afford gas to get to work, let alone all of the other necessities of life.If you left it up to employers, they would try to pay as little as possible.
As far as people refusing to work where the wage is too low, because of the economy, layoffs and illegal immigrants, people are willing to take almost any job to make ends meet.
