If it's yellow, let it mellow?

I'm sure you've heard the saying, "If it's yellow, let it mellow. If it's brown, flush it down." So what do you think? In these time of rising costs, is this something we should instate? Or is it plain gross? Would you do it? HAVE you done it?

I can't stand it when someone doesn't flush "the yellow". First of all, it smells. Second of all, who is the one that has to clean the toilets? Me! Having pee sit in the toilet is not going to keep it clean. The best way to save money when it comes to flushing toilets is to get a newer money saving toilet that uses less water. And an aside, if it's really yellow then that person is dehydrated. The best healthiest pee is almost clear, not dark yellow.

I remember this rule when I was growing up but with all of the public filtering and such I do not think this is a major issue anymore as waste treatment facilities and the like filter the water and make it reusable. As far as cost, the water costs are not too bad but the gas and electric are getting out of control. If they could produce vehicles that can run on water, then it would make a huge statement. To answer your questions: No I do not think it should be instated. Yes it is just gross. Yes I would do it. and Yes I have done it. Thank you for the interesting topic and Have a great day!!!

I have done it.... I grew up on a farm and being on a septic bed instead of sewers we did this to conserve space so it would not have to be pumped as often...My parents still do this! We do this some as well and we live in the city...It saves so much on the water. ~Heavens~

Yeah, why not? If there were guests coming then I'd flush, but I don't think it's any big deal. As it happens, we have a dry compost loo anyway which means no flush at all.

What is a dry compost loo?

A compost loo is one where the matter is not flushed away but covered by a layer of sawdust or similar then allowed to break down naturally. A dry compost loo is one for 'dry' (solid) waste only, as it doesn't have a run off and urinating in it would make it smell.

So maybe something like an outhouse? I've never heard of this. Is it inside? Outside? Why does it not smell? Where does the liquid go? What happens to the compost?
