If you travel to mountain area of south China, you will know why they have pepper. The climate is moist and pepper can help you resist the moist. And it is difficult to carry fresh meat or vegetables there. So they add pepper to preserve food. Every one that go there will find that they love food with pepper soon.

whether to eat pungent food or not depends on our constitutions. the traditional Chinese medicine can explain it very well. it divides people's constitutions into deficiency of yin and deficiency of yang. if you are suffering from deficiency of yang, pungent food will do you good, otherwise, you'd better not eat it. besides, your living environment is also an important factor. if it is damp and cold, pungent food is good to you.
