of old music that they like from the 40's and 50's rather than have to keep changing cd's I wanted to just run it on my puter the way I do with xmas music. It would be to difficult to carry desk top to place of party. So lap top seemed ideal solution. However I don't know how to get the speakers to work. I have great high quality speakers from micro innovations that I use on my desk top, they work with the my dell [windows 98 desktop] and my acer [2007 desktop] So how do I get them to work with my acer extensa 5420 lap top. I have three places to put things in one is for microphone, one is for headphone and I thought the third was for speakers but when I plug in speakers nothing happens. Is it that there is something wrong with that line on my lap top or is it that the lap top doesn't allow for speakers. Also when I was using puter to test the speakers I had a HD manager which would tell me regarding these lines so I could test for sound. and for some reason that icon has disappeared from my control panal listings yet I didn't delete anything since trying to plug in the speakers and learning that they do not work. Any ideas? or help? From those who know about puters? thanks it is appreciated.

The Headphones Jack socket should be fine for an output to speakers..just consider the laptop to be a big ipod! :) Good luck with the Party :)

sorry haven't been back online for a while, things got so hectic, there is something odd about the lap top, sometimes plugging in the speakers makes it work sometimes it doesn't and I have to kind of unplug and plug it back in. Don't know why. Tried reinstallin sound system and talking to puter people under the warrenty. but thanks and the party went well and lol with the exception of the grandchildren and children most were of an age that the old music was good.

ShepherdSpy's right. Just plug it into the headphones jack as that's a line-out, meaning what's from your laptop ( system ) will come out. The mic jack in the middle is for you to plug in your mic, it's a line-in but if you want a clearer sound from an exterior system / mixer to go into your laptop, the jack you plugged in the 1st time, the "speaker" jack on the left is the one you should be considering. That's the line-in jack so you can record with your laptop

"... for some reason that icon has disappeared from my control panel listings yet I didn't delete anything since trying to plug in the speakers and learning that they do not work". If you can't hear any audio from your laptop speaker then probably the drivers for your audio device is missing. Try to reinstall it.
