I have 2 Corys in my aquarium along with a plecostamus and some sort of a striped fish. I have noticed the last 3 mornings in a row that one of the Corys has been lying on his back on the gravel. The first time, I was sure he was deceased. When I opened the lid, he flipped over and swam away! He is really freaking me out. Are fish supposed to lie on their backs like that? Or is he preparing to die?

Hello,
my boyfriend is the fish nerd but I know he has some upside down green coreys maybe thats just the way they go? Are they new into your tank? Is your tank estabalished? Did you cycle everything?? You know some times some fish just dont make it. :-(

I have been in the aquarium hobby for over 55 years and this is not a habit that i am familiar with. Plus you should have at least 3 cory cats in your tank (they are social animals). As far as the pleco, I hope that it is not a regular pleco that can get to be over 18 inches long. Most become stunted in small tank and die early and have short life spans. I like the bushymouth plecos because they only get to be between 4 and 7 inches (depending on which species you get) and do not out grow any tanks except the really small tanks.

I had no idea that they could get that big. Right now it appears to be about as long as my index finger.
I had other fish before and that is why I only have 2 corys. The one has been turning on his/her back in the corner for a number of days now. It is very disconcerting. Just as I open the lid to use the net, she/he flips over and swims away.
