I went shopping for groceries this morning and Yes I went to Wal-mart since there is one just down the road from me. I was looking at the tomatoes and they had a nice display setting in front of the produce section. A man was there looking at it and taking pictures. I learned that they are going to just be selling the vegetables that are locally grown here in South Carolina. I think it's good that they are supporting our local economy here. And the tomatoes were looking really good. So I bought 2 nice red ones for

Thats nice that Walmart is supporting the local economy and selling fresh produce from the area. I personally like Walmart, I know that some people are down on Walmart. Walmart does alot of good that people don't know about or hear about. This is an example of it. Some people like to put down Walmart, it is hard for other stores to compete against them. Walmart shoppers have to think about their families and their budget. Walmart is not all bad. This is a good post, I did not know that Walmart was doing this.

RLFinNash said that she saw this happening in her state of Tennessee too and so it must be going on in other places as well. I do like to shop at Wal-Mart too. My daughter works for them and I have seen and heard a lot of good from her. She has gotten a lot of good support from them them.

I think that's really great that your WalMart is supporting local economy and veggie producers. That is wonderful news! I wish ours would do that. We have tons of farmers in the area that grow and sell produce, it would be nice if the local supermarkets supported them instead of veggies from other lands! Thanks for sharing, it's good to hear!

I don't know why but the flooding didn't cross my mind, that's a good point though. Personally, I'm done buying tomatos until mine come in in the garden. Seems they need more regulation of incoming veggies from other countries, or they're going to have to devise a test that can be done on incoming crop goods (quickly and cheaply.) I don't know about you, but I grow lots of those cherry tomatoes in the summer (the ones that are about 1/2 inch to 1 inch around.) I take those and flash freeze them on a cookie sheet and then stick them in a plastic gallon ziplock bag for use in the winter. I don't even blanche them, just wash them and dry. They're great for stews and stuff where you can just grab a handful out of the bag. I don't buy any tomatoes in the winter...they taste like cardboard lol. I'm still impressed that your WalMart is doing that, it's great!

Just maybe after this last e-coli scare they will start I know here in the south we have a lot of small farmers that raise a good variety of produce. I hope to see more and more of our stores doing this. It just might be that local is also cheaper because of the floods that are traveling down the Mississippi and all that flooded farm ground.

That's awesome that they are going to be supporting the local farmers by selling locally grown produce. I think more stores should jump on the band wagon and do this especially with the prices of produce we have to pay due to shipping cost.

I never buy tomatoes unless they are grown locally.. I either read or watched it on one of the news shows a few years ago about produce being brought in from Mexico and according to the information that was shown, the tomatoes were fertilized with human feces, so I never by produce without being as sure as I can be about where it came from.. I do buy Grainger County tomatoes (local) as they are the very best tomatoes ever grown.. I do believe we also need to support our local farmer, many of our farms are going under and it is because we are buying produce brought in from other countries.. We never used to have this problem when all of our produce was grown by our own farmers.. So, yes, we all need to support our local economies and our farmers, besides getting safer foods in the bargain..

Wow!A 1.10 for 2 tomatos.I paid 3.14 for 2 tomatos at Wal-Mart when I got some today.I wish I could have paid that much. Its good that Wal-Mart is going to support local farmers that way cutomers can get a better deal on produce.Alot of times the prices rise on produce because of transportation of the produce .So that woud save us alot.

I do buy groceries mostly at WalMart. But we have a family-owned store in another town near us.I have been buying my tomatoes there since they are home-grown around here, too.I worry about where tomatoes come from right now with the scare about salmonella, although now they are saying it may not have started with the tomatoes.
