Renting or Buying

I am a newly landed immigrant here in Canada and am pondering what would be the best decision to make. If it would be best to just rent an apartment or get a loan from the bank to buy your own house. I am expecting my wife and kids to join me in a couple of months so we would need a place of our own to stay.
Can anyone suggest or justify what is best?

Well buying you will get tax breaks and probably a cheaper monthly note plus you are making money and not just throwing it away. But if your here for short term or my travel around a bit I would wait until you are ready to settle somewhere.
