Best and worst (One)

What are the best and worst sounds you ever heard? For me the best sound ever was the first time my second daughter laughed. Shw was only a few months old and lying in her boucinette and I was sitting on the floor next to her folding washing and watching TV. She started to gurgle gleefully, out of the blue, I turned and looked at her and began to laugh back, it was so delightful a sound then she laughed outright. This caused me to laugh as well and we sat there laughing our heads off at each other for a little while. It was a beautiful moment. The worst sound is a toss up between two. There was a hail storm so bad that I got my daughter, (same one as above, grandson and dog and sat in the big built-in wardrobe in my room with the door shut. It went on for what seemed like ages, this deafening, roaring, clattering sound. I thought the house must surely be being torn apart around us. We were terrified and sat huddled together and trying to hold our hands over the baby's and dog's ears. The other terrible sound was when I had tethered my goat to a farm implement in a paddock across the road. A dog came by and ran barking at Pickles ferociously. Pickles was very young and had never experienced anything like this before and he tried to get away and hide and he screamed. I will never forget that heartrending sound of abject fear and panic. Can you think of the worst and best sounds you have ever heard?

the best for me is when I heard Ross cry for the first time , As you know pal he has CP and we didn't expect him to live , so to hear him cry so many hours after being born was great , the worst words ( not sound ) was when the DR said Mum had Alzheimer's too as well as my Dad , not a sound really but was all I could hear in my head for days xx

Yes dear friend, I read about the nerves in your back. It sounds excruciating. I had problems with my lower back and found that if I lay on my bed and pulled up my legs one at a time and held my knee close to my body for several seconds, it relieved things somewhat. My doctors have always suggested gentle exercise as well. The nerve must be sitting in the wrong place. I so wish I could take away your pain. Good on Ross!

I know what you mean Wee. Hearing those words must have given your heart a jolt....just as Ross's cry must have done. How is the darlin' boy?

The laughter of any of my children is certainly at the top of the best sound list. Even now, no matter how bad a day I am having all my little avatar has to do is giggle at me and all my issues take a back seat to her smiling face. The worst sound had to have been when I was treed by a deer while he was in heat. I didn't know deer made sounds let alone the god awful noises that were coming out of this 8 point bucks throat. I stayed up in that tree until I was sure he was gone and no where near coming back.

You remind me of a time when I was also canoodling in the bush. We were near a river in a lovely spot and had our blanket and so we became one with nature. It was a wonderful experience, (just one of many actually) and as things increased in tempo and we crashed into our united (loud) climax...all of a sudden the air around us exploded with noise as what seemed like hundreds of birds let out their call, squawk, screech, chirrup and whatever. It was as if they had all been holding their breath watching us and joined in with glee at the end. We actually fell away from each other laughing because we'd been busted in the nicest possible way. It was a happy moment and one I'd forgotten. Thanks for reminding me...lol

I can imagine a friendly, soft gentle greeting from a beloved horse would also do it for me Lakota. And even thpough I have never experienced a tornado, I've seen them on telly. I thought someone would mention that sound as being the worst.

I can imagine the happiness it brought you when you first heard your baby daughter laugh. Infants' laugh are quite contagious and they take away all our tiredness. I useud to have that baby's laugh in my phone and when I first heard it I couldn't stop giggling too. I don't have kids yet but but I used to have a friend who comes to my apartment on weekend and she's got a lovely baby who loves to laugh and I just love him for that. And one of the worst sounds I have ever heard was the sound of 60 cows' feet running behind me and I thought they were chasing me. My goodness, my heart pounded like canon in the middle of Iran and Iraq war it practically pained. I was only about 7 years old then and even now when I remember it I could still feel the pain in my chest.

That must have been very frightening Jemina...were you running away from them? Were the cows actually chasing you? You are sooo right about baby's laughter being infectious...

I'll agree with you, Ms Tickle, that there's nothing quite like the sound of a child's laughter. My second favorite sound would be gently falling summer rain. It takes me back to a time when everything was so much simpler. On the other hand severe thunderstorms make me quake with fear, and I also hate the sound of my apartment fire alarm which goes off frequently.

The sound of an alarm going off would set the adrenline pumping I'm sure...as long as you don't become too accustomed to it my dear.

I remember too, when we lived near a huge hospital, on one of the main roads to the hospital, and the sounds of the sirens wailing in the night filled me with dread. I would always think of people sick, injured or even dying and feel so sad for their loved ones. The emotions were very strong.

The worst sound I ever heard was the crunch as our nextdoor neighbour ran over and killed their cat. I had been patting the cat only a moment before, but it ran out onto the road when it heard its owners car. None of us said anything - it was just too sad. The best sound was the first time my daughter said "Mummy". Like others here, I loved hearing her laugh, but that "Mummy" was just amazing. Now it's more like "Muuuummmmm!" ... not such a nice sound ... lol.

I had this sad experience with my beloved cat Cassie several years ago. There was no sound per se...just the bump of the cars wheels...unforgettable and so sad. I miss that beautiful, wonderful lady. I don't remember my girls first saying "Mum" but my elder daughter calls me "Ma" which I don't like. I love hearing my grandaughters calling me "Grandy".

That is very sad about your pet. My daughter has now started calling me by my first name, which I really don't like her doing. I think it makes her feel grown up. She doesn't have to grow up JUST yet!

Yep those giggle and gurgles sure hit a soft spot in our hearts don't they. The best ound i have heard is my little sis trying to talk at about about 3 months old and when we would smile she would smile and gibber jabber all the more with giggles mixed in. The worst sound I have ever heard..Screeching tires, breaking glass, screaming and a deathening metal crunch of two cars hitting almost head on...and one hitting it froom the back happened right in front of my home to my brother in law and his very pregnant(8months)wife and a one and a half year old in a car seat in the back. When they were getting ready to turn into the drive. What saved them was they weren't wearing their seat belts. The car looked awful crunched up thankfully it wasn't a "new" model because they made sturdier cars then and that is another thing that saved their lives.

The best sound, that is a hard one to narrow down, there are so many. But, I love the sound of a steady rain on a metal roof. I used to live in Texas in a rural community and we had a tin roof and it was just so calming when it would rain. I raised goats there and I've heard that sound you are speaking of, a goat can 'scream'. However, I think the worst sound I ever heard was breaking glass. We were sitting on our front porch having coffee on a Sunday morning, when we heard glass shatter at a house just around the corner. It was not just any glass, as soon as we heard it we knew it was a sliding glass door. We ran around there and there was a little girl that had been playing inside with her friend that lived there, and had thought the door was open and had run right through it. She had cut her leg from the inner thigh down to her knee. We kept it stabilized and applied pressure to it, and kept her calm and talking until the ambulance showed up. They were at the friend's grandmother's house and she had gone to church that morning. She only needed stitches, didn't cut anything vital, and recovered fully. But, I'll never forget the sound of that sliding glass door breaking.

Ahhh, gee. That must have been an alarming sound...probably also the sound of the child running into it, the band then the crash of glass. I can imagine how the peace was shattered. I always found the sound of rain on a tin roof to be quite noisy...lol.

There is no sound like a childs laugh, no matter how old they are. It is so full of innocence and hope. The worst sound would have to be the phone ringing. Usually when it rings, it is bad news etc.

Hi MsTickle, Laughter and music are both first choice good sounds to me and the worse sound is car alarms going off for no reason every five miniutes, the pitch of them seems to grate on my nerves. My nan used to huddle under the stairs in storms but I love to watch out at them and they really don't bother me at all. Ahh poo Pickles that must have been a horrific sound for you to hear. Ellie :D

Oh yes...the car alarms going off. How annoying...especially if it's the middle of the night. A dog barking incessantly through the night too is a pain. Pickles was later attacked by a dog I was minding and his screams were making me cry. I was right there with him with the dog attacked to his jaw, trying to get the dog to let go. I'll never forget it.

Yea I probably can, but my worst one will be a downer I'm sure. My best would probably be similar to yours, my son's first cry or his first giggle. He could make me smile with that giggle no matter how bad my day was. :) My worst (and I won't dwell on it here) was hearing my mom's last breath last year as she passed away while I held her hand.

Some of the best sounds are when the grand kids say "Grandma I love you" some of the worst sounds are when one of them gets hurt. You can tell by the sound when they get hurt or are just playing.

They are lovely words to hear Polly, for sure. I just thought of another awful sound...the sound of a bathroom tap, slowly dripping on a freezing winter night. You just know you have to get up and tighten the tap but you know that when you leave your snuggly warm bed, you will be very, very cold.

This is a very interesting question, MsTickle! I love the sound of rain on the roof when I'm warm in bed, and I love the sound of jet planes flying low. As for the sounds I hate, I REALLY hate hearing someone being sick! It makes me want to gag myself. And as you say, any sound of a creature in pain is horrible and stays in your mind for a long, long time.

I love the sound of rain on the roof too. If I'm not in bed, I think about getting in and snuggling up with a good book. I don't like the sound of low flying jets though, that's a bit scary for me. Yes that sound of someone being ill is pretty bad and it can have the same effect on me. This discussion is sure provoking some sensations and feelings for me...good and bad..
