Will you miss your screen saver? Mine is of the black and white I Love Lucy coming on and stick figures they use between shows. I can't do without that!

I read that today, too. I don't use screensavers anymore. On my laptop, I don't need to. When I am not using it, I close it. On my desktop, we had it set to shut down after a few minutes of not using it. I was an idiot and put a screensaver back on there of a bunch of pictures that I had saved. I think all those pictures were driving my energy bill up because my electric bill got really high after that. I turned the screensaver back off and set it back to shut the monitor off when it's not being used. Now, my energy bill is back down. I never even thought about that.

Such a small little "nothing" thing using so much electricity! Who'd a thunk it!! But I guess is does. I usually turn mine off completely when I am done for awhile. I'll work a few hours in the AM and then shut down for a few hours, then go back on. I did do it to save electricity, but not realizing it was using that much anyway, I always think, save a little to save alot - it is using electricity and I am payig for it so a few pennies a month - I will save them. All the little things add up at the end of the month.

Be careful about how much you shut down and start up your computer, though. Computer are built to run continously. It takes a lot of power to start up your computer, so you might not be saving energy in the end by shutting it off and starting it up a few times a day. If you keep your computer running, just set it to go into sleep mode when you are not using it. That way, you are not using those large "bursts" of energy throughout the day to start up your computer and are keeping it running using a minimal amount of energy.

I don't have a screensaver either. I did have one or two but was so long ago I don't even remember what they were LOL
My monitor "goes to sleep" when the computer is not in use for a certain number of minutes and that's fine for me :)
Same with my laptop. I never saw the point. After all if I am not using the computer and am not there I won't even be watching the silly screensaver do its thing hehehe
The article makes sense. Of course sometimes we can't turn the computer off for some reason. For example in my school we cannot turn off the computers, they have to stay on because that's how the borard sends updates an stuff.

Not there so not watching - yeah, what's the point! My PC has always been in my kitchen/family room area so it was always seen but I am not on it enough to bother - just did it cause they said about hte burn in thing. BUt when I was not going to be there for a while, I just turned it off sto save electric. Funny how things change and we don't even get an "oh, by the way.." I would have thought it would have been a good selling point for the flat screens - save energy....

I"d like to do that to, but I have my walls of pictures of my kids, so I just turn the PC off. I have a desktop picture of my kids. I jsut always worry something will happen (that is just my luck) if I leave it on unattended.

I don't use a screen saver because the last one I downloaded froze up my computer pretty bad. I turn mine off when not using it to save on energy. When I don't turn it off, however, the monitor just goes to sleep. :)

Yeah we got hit hard with a power surge when we got our new computer. Good thing there was a warranty on it because it had to be sent back to be rebuilt. Now when I know a storm is coming, I automatically shut it down and unplug it for a while, better to be safe than sorry. I need to get a surge protector. :)

Mine will go to sleep, I still just prefer to turn it off. I might for get it is one or somehow someway soething will happen and crash my PC - power surge or something. Out here in CA we get black outs in the summer all the time cause of the heat. Plus, the heat the little hard drive accumulates - I'll just give it a little break to cool off!

I love screen savers but don't get to use one. My computer "goes to sleep" before it would ever come on. It seems like there are two settings om mine...the automatic screen saver from windows would come on before the one I chose and then it would go to sleep. No matter what I changed the settings to I could not get mine to stay up beyond the initial "preview screen saver". Anyway...ours barely gets left on long enough to worry about it anyway.
