Do you think the world can ever be a truly happy place?

I believe that all people are dimwits and selfish little brats in there own little ways, and I'm wondering what is needed for people to realize their ways and change them? I know that it can't be a single event, since there are so many different ways a person can act selfish, whether through racism or stinginess. I (unfortunately) think that only some mass epidemic in which millions die and suffer all around the globe is the only way. This will cause such multitudes of grief in all people that they will be forced to take a step back and look at the big picture, thus realizing what nincompoops they've been. I recently wrote an essay for my English final that ended with the sentence "Life is just a cycle of death and pain, learn to deal with it the best way you can." Unfortunately, that will always be true in my opinion unless something drastic happens. What do you make of this?

I do not think it is possible for human beings to always get alone. It is human nature to state your opinion and arguing is not always a bad thing. We can not have a perfect world because no one would be unique. As for a fatal epidemic why would you think that would keep people from being selfish? do you not think they would be more selfish in protecting themselves and their loved ones.

They would be, but I believe that karma would cause the most selfish to lose the most, therefore causing them to look back at the world and comprehend the world in a much more open-minded way. For instance Osama Bin Laden would lose all his bodyguards and soldiers, and then he'll be found, but Oprah would only lose that which would be inevitably lost in the first place, such as an already-ill relative. Your comment about being unique reminded me of a poster at my elementary school. It said "No one is just like you" and had a field of yellow roses with one red one in the middle. I always thought about how all the yellow roses were exactly the same.

Although it is a beautiful thought, I am not very confident that this will ever happen. Especially with all of the violence, poverty, hunger, etc. I wish these problems could be solved, not that they are the only problems in the world, (just examples), but I don't see that happening in my lifetime.
