Define "friend"

someone wrote that she has different kinds of friends, then there are those who are referred to as "associate, acquiantance, colleague," which would not qualify as friend to me. meanwhile, my sister could refer to someone she just meet as a "close friend." a friend to me is someone who shares my sentiments and values. if not shares them, she/he at least understands and respects them. what is your definition of friend?
