Does anyone know when eggs expire/go bad? I have them in the fridge, and in the carton they came in as I heard that makes them last longer than the plastic containers that come with the fridge that can cause humidity and such and te cardboard containers breath and it will make them last longer, but in weeks- once you buy them, how long generally do they last? Can you just crack them and if they don't smell, they are okay? What's your time line?

I found a wab site about freezing eggs and keeping them fresh. they said don't store the eggs in the door because of temperature fluctuation, to store them in the bottom of the fridge for about 4 or 5 weeks from date of purchase because they are a fast turn over. To freeze them mix them up as for scrambled eggs and freeze them in muffin tins then into plastic bags. an egg is about 1/4 of a cup. Here where I live one can buy 1/2 dozen of eggs if one choses too.

Hadn't thought about being on the door - that is usually where the little compartment is! I never used it as I was more concerned about them falling out of the flimsey little compartment than the temp. Good thing to know! I had heard to keep them in the cardboard carton they came in for longevity. THanks for the tip about freezing scrambled eggs. Interesting to know. I don't eat eggs much, but the GD's do. I mainly use them for baking cookies.

If you want to use them for baking instead of eating then freezing might be a good way to keep them. as I said about 1/4 cup is equal to an egg for recipes.

i don't know if there is a certain amount of weeks. look on your carton there should be a date printed that says when you should use them by. also i've been told to put them in water. if they float they are bad you should throw them out. if they stay on the bottom then they are still ok to use.

These have a "sell by" date, which doesn't mean they are bad after that. I'll try the floating thing! Interesting to know!

I think they stay good past the date. I heard in the carton they can last more than a month but I don't know for sure.

Yeah, that "sell by" date is just when the stores have to sell them by or take them off their shelves. I'll just have to see how it goes. They were on sale for $1.50 so no big deal if I dump and start over! I say they have been there 2 weeks, but could be longer. Beter safe than sorry, I say!

I've never really found out how long they last although I've had them go bad on me more than once. I guess it depends on how fresh they are. I did hear once you shouldn't leave them in the fridge more than three weeks but I don't know how true that is. If you're afraid of them getting into your pan when they have gone bad just open the egg into a separate bowl before starting to cook them. I always do that because I never know when they are bad and you cannot tell by looking at them.

Yeah, I'll just give them a try and see how it goes. Guess there's no real certain way to tell, but to smell and taste!

The egg cartons I buy usually have an expiration date on them. So I just go by that. It's usually a couple of weeks but I eat alot of eggs so there have never been eggs in my fridge that were close to reaching the expiration date.

Eggs - Eggs...
We have a lots of contravercy that whether the Egg is the Vegetarian or Non-vegetarian, at this point of time, regarding the expirey of the Eggs is very good/nice discussions.. According to me, it is always better to eat the Egg, with in 15 days of its birth, because after 15 days, it starts grow up for hen's process.. If you break the Egg after 15 days, of its birth, you may find some blood inside the egg, this means that, the hen started to form inside the egg, this is equallent to the killing.. and also this is also not advisable to eat, because there is a chance for this to affect your stomach by any way.. So, try to eat the Eggs with in 15 days from the day of its birth and also try to eat the "Egg from the country Chicken" this will have more engegy than the white leghorn chickens, becuase in the white leghorn, the egg will be made it by ortificially, by giving the injuction to the chicken.. (the business motive getting eggs)

Very interesting. I get them at the grocery so I have no way of knowing how old they are - I assume fairly recent, hopefully!! I have had somein my fridge for over 2 weeks. I usually only use them for baking cookies and for my GD when they come at breakfast time. I just need to know for sure.

Look on the carton, there is an expiration date. The eggs should be good a few days past that date.

Well, I never have a problem with eggs lasting very long in my house. We love eggs and eating them so many different ways I never have to worry about them going bad. But in saying that, I don't think that eggs have an expirey date, per say, but go bad after a long period of time. I think that they are probably good for at least one month, but I don't know that for sure. I have had them in my fridge for longer than that at times, and I have eaten them, not thinking that they could go bad. I am interested in reading what other members here have to say about it, so after posting this, from my email, I will read and see.

I will usually use them up to a couple days past the sell by date. Eggs are a dairy product and so you should be careful with them as they can make you sick if they are to old but that is just me my husband has had salmenello food poisoning before so we are really careful with dates.

There's an easy way to tell if an egg is good or not. Put it in plain water. If it lays on its side it's fresh, stands up a bit older but still ok, floating rotten.

I have once kept some eggs in my fridge and forgotten about them for at least two weeks. After two weeks, I realized about the eggs and checked them out. They have changed their color and I didn't tasted them. I have thrown them in the Dust bin and never remembered it again. I think thats it. Two weeks in the expiration time for the eggs to be stored in a fridge.

here a way to tell if they still fresh after the expiration date. Fill a deep bowl of pan with enough cold water to cover an egg. Place the egg in the water. If the egg lies on its side at the bottom, the air cell is small and its very fresh. If the egg stands up and bobs on the bottom, the air cell is larger, and it isnt quite as fresh. If the eggs floats on the surface, it should be discarded. A very fresh egg out of the shell will have an overrall thick white which doesnt spread much and the yolk will stand.
