There are different types of goldfish, but goldfish have been known to live many years. They prefer cooler water - cooler than most tropical fish - and will supposedly be healthier and live longer if their water is kept in the right temp range.

Fancy goldfish should have 20 gallons of water for the first one and 10 gallons for each additional one minimum, more is better and also make sure to do regular partial water changes "to flush the toilet". Common or pond goldfish should have at least 100 gallons or preferably a pond to live in.
