My close friend got me into birdwatching many years ago. We have a bird program on our computer. You put in the birds that you see and can identify and all the information about them, including where and when you saw them first. The program has a bird directory with pictures of birds, their habitat and bird calls.
I bought a nice pair of binoculars to bird watch. My husband made several bird feeders for different birds. We also hung hummingbird feeders as well. To keep the squirrels from eating our bird feed, my husband put a baffle under two of the bird feeders. The other two are hanging on a pole and he cannot put a baffle on it. The squirrels took over those. Now we have a dog and he keeps away the squirrels. Only problem is the birds don't feed on the ground anymore. In fact, the mourning doves have gone to flying up into the bird feeders and on the baffle, something they had never done before.
We have had blue jays, juncos, mourning doves, finches, red bellied sapsuckers, several different kinds of woodpeckers, red cardinals, sparrows, house wrens, red-winged blackbirds, eastern blue birds, cow birds, purple martins, brown thrashers, bobwhites, hummingbirds, black-capped chickadee, carolina chickadee, tufted titmouse, white and red-breasted nuthatch, Carolina wren, Robin, blue grosbeak. And we have black crows galore, at times. Those and the cow birds could stay away.
The one I really love is the hummingbird, although we only see the ruby-throated ones around here. My husband moved their feeders from their usual spot, so they have been scarce this year.
The eastern blue bird shown in the photo is one I found on the church sidewalk. He had apparently flown into the glass door and was stunned. I ran back to my car, got my camera, and got a few pictures of him. He sat there for a good 10 minutes.
