I think it's so the doughnut dough can cook evenly all the way through. Otherwise, it would still be raw in the middle or burnt on the outer edges and cooked in the middle. This way, the dough is the same width all the way around.

I guess to make it more attractive and unique from others bread. Or maybe it is more faster to cook and removed from boiling oil.

maybe because it is easy to hold it thats why they put holes. and they can sell the holes in a different price. very intelligent right? har har har. or it looks fancy with a hole, with no hole it looks like regular cakes. i really dont know i just want to be funny. am i funny.

All I can guess is it's all about the money. Companies are greedy and they realize they can make a fortune selling donut holes. So, the dough that would ordinarily be used to fill the middle of the donut is then rolled into balls and sold seperately. Also, when donuts are made, at least commercially, they are placed into a machine which shapes them into what we eat, so technically the holes were never in them in the first place.

This is really funny,I readed all the comments some are serious ,some are funny.I really likes doughnut, specially( dunkin donuts) w/ different toppings w/ it.In my opinion they make it like that becouse they get bored making square, and triangle etc shape bread. So some other bakers think "Hey we can make it different" so we can sell it more to the kids. They make it like that becouse kids are crazy about circle and w/ hole in the center. So the kid cannot be bored while eating it,specially they put more colorfull toppings w/ it.A lot of people get bored eating the same thing so they have to be more creative. So they can sell a lot w/out people knowing it.Becouse its look delicious...Atleast thats what i am thingking if i see doughnut..Just like i want them everytime i see them..They are calling me " Come here Che Buy me... buy me..." Easy to hold and its not much becouse of the whole so you will want it more hahaha...i am becoming silly hahaha...Sorry about that.. but thats what i think if i see donnuts..Have a nice day... Greetings from Che!

I know this kind of thing because my partner is a baker before. He baked different bread, and cakes.he said now a days he need to be creative or else the bread is not going to sell. Most of mother picking breads that thier kids want it.The best consumer are the kid if they said they want it mother cannot say no for it.Unless it is too much.Too bad that my partner cannot baked anymore.he got problem w/ his back. Thanks for BR..ENjoy posting take care.. greetings from Che!

Hi myliez, doughnut is a quite popular dessert in my place. It’s loved by all races and aged groups. Of course children love them most. Doughnut is characterized by its circular ring-shape and its peculiar fragrance of oil. I think the circular hole at the center would make it to appear larger for the same amount of material if it were made without the hole at the center. Of course its ring structure makes it to look unique and attractive. The flakes of sugar on its surface make it to look snowy and different from other common desserts as well.

I think that some doughnuts have a hole in the middle just to create something unique. If all doughnuts were one solid object, it would be just like the rest of the pastries and sweets. Also, not all doughnuts have holes in them, some of them have fillings, and some of them are just a solid pastry.
