is the htc touch a good phone?

i kinda want to get the htc touch. however i heard its really hard to send texts and emails. i really like it. i like the fact that its small yet still a solid size. are ther any other good phines out there like the htc touch (doesnt have to be a touch phone) that are similar in size and performance?
