Girls naturally good at makeup?

Do you think girls are naturally good at things like hair and make-up and nails? Or do you think it takes proper tutelage and practice? I thought when really young that I would be naturally good at hair and makeup and nails as a girl - like it was some built in girl gene - but quickly found that no - not the case. LOL. My mom was too busy working as a single mom to help so I just practiced and practiced on my eyeliner. Now I'm a mom and have no time!

well i certainly do not think so. i don't think there is something that either gender is naturally good at. it takes practice and tutelage to excel in anything. i've met boys who are much better at these. in fact, quite a number of the famous hair stylists are male. does that mean they are actually naturally better?

Its certainly true in my case that its not something genetic, I was never naturally good at it. IT does seem though, like those who are always naturally good at music, playing by ear at young age, or art that some, girls and boys both have natural talent that only gets better with practice - as opposed to me - I only got worse at make up and nails while in writing short stories, and reading (which I started at two the reading -)I was naturally good at and got better with practice. I wish practice would get me better at nails makeup and baseball! I remember in school - I used to concentrate so hard on trying to get that bat to hit the ball thrown at me and never got close - same with the nail brush! ha ha!

I think you are right there is no girl gene that teaches us how to do hair, make-up and nails. While I have mastered the make-up part the hair and nails sometime escape me.

Nowadays I generally wear my hair in a ponytail - I'm a new mom. And before, to work, even with the sharp sheath suits and manicured nails (weekly nail appt's), I wore my hair simply, either back in a barrette, or french braided. I was never one for hair dryers and hairspray. Wouldn't know how to use them anyway! And my hair is sooooooo prone to frizz as its curly that I'd have to buy an expensive diffuser anyway. My mom's generation went to the beauty parlour each week and many times left shampooing to that day! She lives in a do it your self kind of assisted living place now and she has someone who comes to her house to do her hair. Still likes the glamour! I kind of miss working because I had an excuse to get a manicure each week

You know what though? Some girls - and guys - seem to have that gene - they just always naturally were good at these things....certainly not me.

I don't think so. I wish there was, but I have never mastered applying nail polish. I always make a huge mess!

Oh me too! It gets all over my my fingers hands, clothes and whatever surface I'm working on and then some! And it gets smudged and clumped easily - even with new polish - and my one of my long hairs always gets stuck in the brush!

i'm not really good when it comes on putting some makeup on myself or even to some of my friends. i'm also not good in putting a manicure on my nails and even styling my hair lol i was never taught and not that kind of interested when it comes on those things but i know that i can learn it easily if the time comes that i'm gonna be interested on how to learn that kind of stuff. besides, i'm kinda lazy when it comes on putting some make up and styling my own hair lol i just wanna be natural. no make up and other styles at all

It takes practice, practice, practice; of course, that isn't what we see in the media as we are growing up. We are presented with this idea that women just naturally are feminine; no, femininity is something that must be learned. My mother has never worn make-up, so she was of no help in that department. She also doesn't wear dresses or do her hair.

I feel that's true. I feel very feminine inside - but also a bit yang - as I feel strength and a drive to do well but certain feminine rites like make-up and such are crafts that need to be nurtured and hopefully passed down. My mom never had time as she was a single mom. She was very glamourous though - she always reminded me of Elizabeth Taylor when she was in her forties and fifties - the years I was growing up. She wore makeup and teased her hair and had long fingernails - she was called the Dragon Lady at the state department and there were people her firm worked with over at the SD that definitely had a crush on her! In fact many men fell for her and it was a combination of both her inherent feminity and charm and that femininity she learned and cultivated over the years. She was lucky though, she grew up in the fifties when glamour was in. :) Hey wilsongoddard - you have a great day!

When I was younger I was no good at all about makeup, but now that I am older I have gotten to be an expert at it. I have been told by friends whose makeup I did for them that I should do it professionally.

So it sounds like your answer is B - it takes practice rather than a natural inborn skill? I think it would be a great career poohbear - bringing out natural beauty. I would choose a natural make-up line like Ayerveydic Makeup to work with. Good luck!

It is like any talent, it takes practice. It took me a few years to get the hang of doing my nails. Now I know what I am doing.

Oh, no. Girls are most definitely not automatically good at those things. :) That's why I wear eyeliner, and that's about it. I've worn it enough that I can usually put it on without jabbing myself in the eye. :) When I was in theater in high school, I always had to get the other girls to do my makeup. I just could never get it to look right if I did it myself!

Its good you got that help. My mom had a friend who sold marykay but she believed in caking on the make up and said I was pale so needed a base a fe w shades darker then my own shade. Which I think is wrong - makeup is meant to enhance not totallly change. And once she put it on me - it was so totally obvious I had it on!

I think it's an art that needs to be practiced. I don't remember if I taught my girls how to do it...maybe the hair but I think they were sneaking the makeup on long before I knew it! LOL....like putting it on after they got to school! LOL

I know a lot of girls did that - in every era. I have a boy so I get out of that - but I may miss 'girl days' that other moms have - going to the spa...

i guess its based on interests...some girls like myself are not good at it..i don't know how to put make up on and on special occasions i go to parlor and have myself fix...while my sister loves make up and she always put on some when she will leave home..

Oh I was definitely interested as a teen and young adult and practiced and practiced but never got good at it. So are you saying that most girls (besides me!) who are interested in it are naturally good and don't have to be taught and practice before getting it down. You may be right in many case, as it seems there are some girls who without help or teaching were always super good at such things!

I think that is a natural thing for women. If you don't know how to fix your hair, nails, or wear clothes; you always have a friend, family member or someone to help you. Then there are books, tv shows that have plenty of tips to help when it come to that.

If girls are naturally good at it as you say, why would they have to ask someone or consult a book? I wasn't, as I say in my thread starter and my mom wasn't around to help as she was workiing. There were no tv shows or books around at the time. I didn't subscribe to any of those kinds of magazines preferring more substanative books so I had no idea they had tips in them. So had to struggle on my own. Just wore eyeliner and a little lipstick.

I think that all things come to those that practice and want to learn. It certainly didnt come natural to me but I wanted to learn so I did. My mother was also a single mom and very busy so my best friends mom was nice enough to spend time with me. I'm very thankful for my friends! Cheers, Tianna

In my opinion not all of girl can have that talent. Some other girls need to learned things like that becouse they cant do it w/ thier own. They need somebody else to do thier haid and make up.I am lucky that i can do it..My sister cant she need me everytime and my gay cousin to fix her if we have to attend to a party. But she's not using much make-up mybe thats way she is not used to it. Take care and have a nice day! Greetings from Che!

i think its all learnable. but when it comes down to it. theres certain things that would be useful to have. good eyesight for one. sometimes its hard to me to tell without putting my glasses back on if everythings even. also having a steady hand totally helps. knowing your color wheel. and things of that nature.

So you agree - its not a natural thing - something we're born with but somethign we learn and practice at. I have glasses too - I had to lean far into the computer - nose to glass! - to see. Not too steady hand and very clumsy - I can't even cut things in a straight line! I'm not sure about my color wheel but I'm pretty much autumn colours I think. I have pale skin with green (olive) undertones. Although nowadays, my rosacea makes me a bit well - rosy!
