who is the head of the family?

wats the criterion of choosing the head of a family,
as old times is it the husband, or if there are grandparents are they the head, or is it the person who is ezarning more among husband and wife

well i am the head of our familly simply because i am the only parent that is in the household.
i think times have changed and it all depends on the familly and the adults there in question some men are quite happy to let the woman be the head of the familly and vise versa.

Head of the family is decided based on the seniority of the person, weather he earn a lot or not.
It is simply like this the more the older you grow the more the wiser u become.
Now these days there are no joint families as the whole family is fragmented into small bits and lead mostly by husbands or fathers.
