do you really take the time to "think" of the person before you buy the gift?
a friend of mine got a gift recently for her birthday,it was a "fish finder",she doesn't fish, her mate does, guess who really got the gift.
That's kinda makes a joke of the saying "its the thought that counts".

hi katherleen, Yes, it will take time to think of the right gift, and it will take more time to actually follow through and enjoy the gift together. isometimes i feel anxious about the right one. whether it would like to him or her. so i always keep somebody with me to ask is it better or not. everytime i call my best friend to acoompany with me to buy gifts for anybody. thank you

Yes I do think of the person before I buy the gift. It helps me decide on the likes and dislikes of the person and therby helps me decide on the most appropriate gift.
A lot of people just give away some of the gifts that they have received from someone else on another occasion.
In your friend's case maybe your friends mate was being thought about when the gift was being decided.
