You are right in that it is very hard to compare any sort of sportsman over different generations. In the says that Don Bradman was playing, they weren't professionals but had other jobs when they were not playing cricket. These days they are purely professional cricketers, and that will always make a difference. :)

Common there is a lot of Time difference. Days are not the same. So,I say

It is difficult to compare batsmen across eras because batsmen in the past played under rules, faced different bowlers, played on different pitches...
As a Windian I'll have to go with Sir Garfield Sobers or George Headley or Viv Richards as old-timers.
For the present:
-Brian Lara for natural talent and flair
-Ramnaresh Sarwan for skill and maturity
-Chris Gayle for flair.
But batsmen do not a cricket team make. it is better to have a team that works well together at all times than one with one star and ten other crappy players.
I admire the South African team because they play like a team with each part contributing to the whole- changing roles when necessary.
Special bigup to my Windies team.Take the ICC trophy once again.
