Best way to get published for the first time?

Hi, I was just wondering what you all thought would be the best way to get published for the first time. I suspect that with the internet and the digital age, things have changed from the old world of sending in your hard copy of a article or manuscript to a publisher and hoping to catch a break. So what would you all suggest in trying to get a story/article etc published in this digital age? Thank you and God bless, leofa
