Okay, let's be honest here. How many times have you started to write a book or a short storry and never finished? Be it that you got bored with the subject, or couldn't solve the problem your characters were facing. How many books go unfinished?
Or do you finish every single project you start?
I have problems finishing bigger projects because of my short attention span. But I really want to, it's my dream. How is it with you?

I have written two novels. My problem is not with writing the novel it's with the editing. Editing must be done, and it must be done several times... until it is as perfect as it can be. Editing is boring. I avoid editing... which is why my novels are going nowhere fast. I need to get rid of the distractions (the internet is a good one!) and get back to my editing.
Oh, don't edit until you have finished the novel. If you go back and edit you will never get the novel finished. Puke it out and clean it up later.

I have written a novel. You do it one page at a time.

I've finished several novels myself, but I do suffer from the editing bug...not being able to "puke it out" all at once. It is a daunting task to sit down and write a full novel. I find that if I work on smaller projects (articles) at the same time, it helps the creative process along. I have had several novels that I've started and quit writing for one reason or another. They are in a file, and someday, I hope to get back to them with a fresh outlook on where they are headed. est of luck to you. You can do it. Do it just one page at a time.

I took part in the National Novel Writing Month last year, where you have to write a 50,000 word draft in November. I got up to about 19,000 words, but that was due more to my US Visa finally getting approved the same month and throwing everything up in the air, than actually getting bored with it. Still settling in here, so haven't gotten back to it yet. Will be joining in again this year, no doubt. You can get details of that at http://www.nanowrimo.org/
Try writing short stories. Not nearly the level of involvement required, hugely lower word count, and you can still get these published. As an example... http://tinyurl.com/5xqfug - That was one I wrote in a couple of weeks for the SFX magazine Pulp Idol competition. About 2,000 words, and while it didn't win, it was a runner up; one of about 50 out of thousands, which I was pretty chuffed with. Name in print!
If you want to start REALLY small, have a go at http://www.ficlets.com/ , where you can publish short stories no larger than 1,024 characters. That's a good laugh, and you can rattle something off there in about 10 minutes, and still feel some sense of achievement ;)
