Do you think it's better to own a home or rent?

We have owned a home for over 22 years and it seems we continue to put all of our money into it to keep things running properly and keep it in good shape. Then there is all the time spent mowing the lawn, keeping up the yard, basic maintenance, etc. Sometimes we wonder if we'd have more money if we rented a place that takes care of all the maintenance so we wouldn't spend the money on it. What do you think? Is it better to rent or to own?

We owned our home now for 35 years. We also put a lot of money in our home but it was all worth it. I rather have my own home all the money you put on rent you can put it down on your own home.At least you can all it your own home.

Good points from everyone. In know the investment of a home is a good thing as we almost have ours paid for. I just wondered what others thought. Thanks.

I think if you pay rent you have nothing to show for your money. Money wasted. If you own your house at least it will be yours someday. The up keep can be a bother but well worth it.

Owning is the ultimate way to go! However, everyone is just not ready to own a home. There's a lot of responsibility that comes with it i.e. long-term mortgage, upkeep, maintenance, liability, property taxes -- and more! If you have a family I'd say definitely a great move now -- but if you're single it just may be too much house for one person. Again, home ownership is the ULTIMATE goal but the timing to take that plunge is different for each person.
