The mastermind of a criminal ring that secretly carved up more than 1,000 corpses, removing bone and tissue they later sold for use as surgical implants, is slated to be sentenced to prison today. Michael Mastromarino, 44, of Fort Lee, pled guilty earlier this year to enterprise corruption, theft and other charges in Brooklyn Supreme Court. He faces 18 to 54 years in prison when sentenced this morning by State Supreme Court Justice John Walsh. Mastromarino, the former owner of Biomedical Tissue Services, Inc. in Fort Lee, and his associates were accused of plundering corpses at funeral homes in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. They sold them for millions of dollars to tissue processing companies that prepared them for use as dental implants, hip replacements and other procedures. Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed in state and federal courts by patients who were implanted with processed bits of bones from cadavers. Bones procured by Biomedical Tissue ended up inside 10,000 patients worldwide, according to some estimates This is just sick! Could you imagine knowing you have this tissue inside you? What people do today for money.

This is very scary. This spring my granddaughter had to have a bone graft because of a tumor on her ankle. The first Dr. put in something like plaster of paris. The stuff melted but they wouldn't make an early check up appoment. So my daughter took to some one else and learned that she would have to have a bone tissue implant. I have heard of this type of crime and it worried me. She is doinng fine so far but it is still a worry for her future.
