Printer Cartridge Woes

I have a printer that uses separate cartridges for color and black ink. The color cartridge is reading empty but the black cartridge still has a little ink, but it won't let me print anyway. Why is it forcing me to replace the color cartridge if I only want to print black text? Is there a trick to bypass this? I can't do anything, I get a big red E on my printer and it won't let me do a thing. It's an HP Deskjet F335 All-in-One, if that makes a difference.

I have an all-in-one. It is the smallest one they make, the cartridges are so small that only Smurfs can use them. And if the black cartridges has a little ink, you have to replace it. Why not replace just the black cartridge and see what happened? Usually that will fix the problem. That looks similar to my printer. Does it not bother you having to go to the store and get cartridges like every week or so? I plan to get a better printer one where the cartridges last at least a couple of months.

I think I'll have to replace both. The black is reading low, but the color is reading empty which is why it won't let me do anything. These are small too and relatively inexpensive compared to some of them, but I don't print much at all and really didn't want to have to buy any right now. Looks like I'll have to suck it up and buy both of them.

Don't you just hate it when that happens? I just replaced my old printer with an HP. Of course, it takes two cartridges but they are cheaper than most on the market. And, yes, if one cartridge is out then the printer will not print. I thought is was a faulty cartridge with my old printer and I tried pressing an amonia dampened paper towel to the print head as the refill man told me to do. If the printer has set for a long time without use, sometimes the head of the cartridge will not print. So, the amonia trick helps to get it started again. If the cartridge is empty then this will not work. I have also been told that refilling cartridges is bad and that it harms the printer. I think this is due to the normal wear and tear on the cartridge head and to keep reusing it wears on the printer. But, why then do all the office supply businesses offer refilled cartridges for sale? I am going to research this one before I have to replace the next cartridge. I want this printer to keep working. My new printer is an Officejet J5780 All-In-One. I really like it!

I am renting a room in a friend's house and I do computer work for her. She in trade is going to replace my cartridges and buy my paper. Pretty good trade!

I know sometime cleaning the print head can help, but nothing is working in this instance, so I guess it's off to WalMart to get them replaced. The color is empty and the black is very nearly empty, so I will need to get them both. They aren't as expensive as some of the larger ones, but they don't last nearly as long either. I've used refills in the past and had good luck, but some printers are more picky and yes, it can damage the print head if ink gets clogged, etc. I don't print much at all, so I will just get the new ones and be done with it. Unfortunately.

I have a Brothers all in one and what ticks me off is I can't even use the phone and the answering machine doesn't work either if one of the ink cartridges is out.

Oh now that is going a bit too far. One has absolutely nothing to do with the other. And of course we don't know these things when we buy the machines, right?

I know. One of these days I'm going to get the book out and see if there's a way to bypass that. It sure is a pain.

That's weird...I have an HP all-in-one printer as well and I use separate ink cartridges also..I'm completely zapped of my black ink, but can still use my printer to print anything in color. I've also have had the reverse where I had no color ink, only black and could still print..weird no?

PS...just read one of your responses elsewhere how you mention the color is reading completely empty and the black ink low...it could be that the black ink is actually lower than indicating and which is why you can't do anything...I'm hoping to get refills of ink myself soon...sheesh--it sucks not having the black ink, and people must be wondering why I'm sending letters to them in dark blue ink...uh, different..LOL

I've done the same, where one cartridge was low I was able to print using the other. I'm assuming this is because the color cartridge is actually empty and not just low. Regardless, no matter what I try the error won't go away. This has been going on for at least a week or two. I do believe it is a gimmick to make you go out and purchase the cartridge. These aren't that expense, but they're smaller and go quickly.

Hi Lady, maybe you need to force your printout to mono chrome or black and white, there is setting somewhere in the option for this and you could set this as the default until you have color ink.

Maybe you need to turn your printer OFF for a while then go to your printer & faxes, locate your printer and set it in their properties. I know you can set the default paper size somewhere and there is an option under quality tab to set force printout to black and white. Maybe there is an option also to run printer monitor at window start up try to disable this for a while.

You don't understand. I cannot do ANYTHING as long as this error code is flashing. The error is there when I turn the printer on, even before trying to print something, so it can't be in the print setting, it has to be something in the printer itself.

Ugh, this is so aggravating. I did find a setting that said to use black cartridge only and changed that as well as to grayscale. I turned printer off, rebooted everything. No joy - stupid big red E is still there. Off to WalMart tomorrow I guess. Thanks for the suggestions.

Hi, I have an HP all in one too and I take the color print cartridge out when it is empty and it lets me print in black ink. I hope you can get it figured out, or this helps. Good Luck ~Icy~

Tried that too. Nope, reads an error if there is no cartridge there or if it's empty. Grrrr ...

No. It makes no difference - they are all the same. The printer manufacturers make money from the ink. They can almost give the printer away free! You have to have ink in all the cartridges for even black to work. You will also see that when you print only in black it still uses a bit of the colours too! That is to use more ink. The other thing they found out is on the chipped ink cartridges, like Epson uses, the chip tells the printer/PC that the ink has run out when they have proved that there is still 10%+ ink left in it. In a phrase, my dear, they have got us by the short and curlies! haha

I figured as much, but I also know there are some clever people out there that have learned how to do things that us mere mortals wouldn't know about. Thanks ...

Yeah... I also think why I should buy a color ink when I only want to print black. In the long run, buying color inks is more expensive than buying a printer itself.

I also have a HP printer which is like yours. In my opinion, manufacturers should create printers which have long-lasting inks. But I don't think that they will consider it. Sometimes, I have to replace inks quite often (one or two months). How about you?

This printer was extremely cheap and is a scanner as well, so that was a good deal. The cartridges are smaller and not as expensive as some, but have to be replaced more often, so I'm not sure there is any real savings.

My Canon Printer doesn't reset automatically when I change a cartridge..You go into the printer settings menu and can tell it You've put in a new cart (When You haven't!) and continue using the remaining ink..hope Yours has this feature..! Mine has a Colour cartridge and a black cartridge..you can set in the menu to output in grayscale only,in which case it'll only use the Black one.

I've tried everything I can think of (and that has been suggested here) and nothing is working. That stupid red E won't quit flashing, even after changing all the settings and rebooting, etc.

Did you try printing in grayscale? That's what I do. I know I can still print with my HP if my color runs out. Mine is a all in one also. I just had problems with a canon. I had to buy a print head, and that didn't solve the problem. Now I am out $40 and my printer still won't work, I tried and they won't take the print head back! Ugh!!!! I had to replace a printer due to our water episode, so I bought a Kodak printer (all in one) for $99. It supposedly prints out pictures just as good as the kodak kiosk haven't tried it yet. I bought this printer for the girls to use plus for me to use so I can print out more coupons to use at the store. When I was putting it together it had the dreaded print head, I wish they would have said that on the box, I might have had second thoughts about it. But I think having a print head keeps the cartridge prices down.

I've been able to do that with other printers, but that trick doesn't work with this one. I wanted to print in black and did have black ink in that cartridge, but the color was empty. This particular model doesn't let you print anything if either of the cartridges is empty, forcing you to purchase something even if you won't use it.

mine does the same thing. they all have to have ink in them or it won't work at all.

I had the same issue with my printer last week. I was out of 2 colors, but the black and the yellow were still pretty full. I could not print anything not even in black and white. It is a pain in the butt. I have an Epson and mine does the same thing yours does.

Why would you need to print in white? LOL ... This is really aggravating, because I know I've done it before with other HP printers.

Printer sometimes uses a little bit of colour in the black (couse it's not always 100% black). If you buy new colour cartridge (I think you have to do this anyway) you will be able to print again. Cheers and happy myloting.

Well if it's the color that is empty, then yes, I would say that it's the color that needs to be replaced.

Mine's an Epson so I knew going in that it would behave that way, but it is still frustrating. I'm fairly convinced that I will just replace it with a black printer only. Color ink is stupidly expensive and I barely use it anyway/ If I need color prints, I'll go to staples :)

I print a few pictures here and there so need the color, and this printer is fairly new and hopefully won't need to be replaced for some time, so I'll stick it out.

I'm not sure that there is a way around it. For some reason I believe they are designed that way, which I don't agree with at all. Because lots of people just want to print black and white, and not the color. Hope you got a better answer than I've given here. I'm responding through my e-mail so I don't have a clue what anyone else has already said.

I've been given lots of suggestions to try, and none of them work with this particular model. I know I've been able to print in color before if my black cartridge was empty, but I can't get this one to do anything, I just get that big red E from the 'git go'. I just returned from WalMart with new cartridges and as soon as I popped it in, the error went away and it printed what was in the queue.

I have an Epson printer and the colors are all seperate from the black etc... Hence you just replace the color you need at the time its empty. I love it. I used to have an HP Deskjet also and I hated replacing the cartridge when I still had ink.

The color and black cartridges are separate, but the printer won't function at all if one of them is empty. I know I've had HP printers in the past where that wasn't the case. If one was empty you just printed with the other, but this one wouldn't do that.
