Do you cut your own hair?

I've been cutting my own hair for a while now. People give me very strange looks when I tell them this, but my hair always looks ok and it suits me fine, lol! I'm quite a low-maintenance person, and I don't really like going to salons; they never cut my hair how I want it, the chairs make me uncomfortable, and I don't need pointless chatter about where I'm going at the weekend or on holiday or what I think of Big Brother. I don't find it a very relaxing or luxurious experience and I'd much rather spend my time doing something useful and my money too; haircuts don't come cheap!! Does anybody else do this? How long have you been doing it?

I trim my own bangs but thats about it. I wish I felt confident enough to trim my own hair. I went in a few months back for a trim and was charged 25 bucks for it. I couldn't have been in that chair for longer than 10 minutes. Plus the old guy next to me (bald on top too) actually had more hair trimmed off than I did! Like you I'm a low maintenance type person. I'm 48 and I've never had a manicure, pedicure or massage. I just can't see paying someone to do those things for me.

Hi, like you I don't believe in paying for manicures or pedicures, but when my daughter got married, she talked me into getting a manicure with fake nails. What a mistake. It was very uncomfortable and when the nails were taken off, my own nails were nearly ruined. It took ages for them to grow back to nice smooth nails.

Lol, sounds like the old guy got better value! You sound like me, I never have any of those things. Just seems so unecessary in my opinion. Thanks for your reply .

Annie, I agree. I've never liked the idea of a manicure or pedicure, especially with false fingernails. I like my nails to be short and the idea of something else stuck on top of them, not letting them grow or breathe properly, or letting me have access to them sounds really horrible! No offense to anyone who likes false nails, but they're just not for me

Yes, I cut my own hair and have been for almost two decades. Of course I shave my head and am completely bald, but I do it myself.

LOL love your comment. I've often been tempted to shave my head but I doubt my guy would like that.

I am 58 and have been cutting my own hair since I was in high school. I don't know how many times I've been to a salon in my life, but it hasn't been many. I give myself perms most of the time also. I haven't ruined my hair yet! LOL

Good on you! It's nice to know that you haven't ruined your hair yet, lol! You're brave to do perms as well. I don't know if I'd be brave enough to try that. I tried colouring my hair once and felt pretty brave attempting that, but then when I rinsed off the solution it didn't look any different at all, . So for the moment I'm sticking to cutting. At least I know I can do that!!

I cannot imagine cutting my OWN hair, but I would do somebody else's for them. My friend's daughter highlights my hair, she does a great job, but I would also never want to do THAT myself either. I can do the kits with the cap and hook but I cannot do foils myself and I prefer the way foils look. When I was a kid, my mom took me to a lady who cut hair, and I don't recall whether she did it for free or if my mom paid her, but I don't remember enjoying the experience very much. I do go to a salon to get haircuts but by salon, I mean the quickie ones that are fairly inexpensive. You don't have to make appointments and if there's no line, it takes only about 20 minutes. I actually like getting a haircut now and then, it means I get that time to just be me, and usually don't bring my kids.

Yes, I know it's not for everybody. But once you try it can be quite an enjoyable experience! No, I'm not sure I'd want to attempt any complicated highlights procedure, I'll stick to cutting for now, lol! It's nice that getting a haircut gives you some time away from the kids. I can appreciate that sentiment!

Totally agree with you! I've not been touched by a hairdresser for about 12 years. I reckon it really doesn't matter too much if I mess up because people are paying a fortune to have their hair cut and styled to look like they just got out of bed! I just go into the bathroom and think 'Hmm, maybe I'll cut my hair ..' - and then I might add a few pink or purple streaks. My husband and sons also cut their own hair.

I like your attitude! I agree, I don't know why they charge so much, and yes, I can do that style just by getting out of bed! For free!! I love the flexibility of cutting your own hair, you can just do what you want exactly when you want. Like the idea of the colourful streaks as well ...and the fact that your husband and sons cut their own hair too. I'm interested in how old your sons are, are they older sons or kids? It would be quite cool for a mum to let their kids cut their own hair - tho' I don't think I'm ready to let my daughter have this freedom just yet, lol .

My sons are in their 20s now - so not quite as laid-back of me as it may have sounded, but they have both been cutting their own hair since before they left school. The problem with letting little kids do it is that they have a tendency not to stop once they get to things like earlobes ....

I do! I'm the only one I trust to cut it while it's growing out. As long as I have a hair scissors. Besides, it's therapeutic and fun. I've been doing this off and on since 2002. We lived in Germany back then and I didn't know the language, so I was frightened to get my hair cut at a salon! Though in retrospect, they probably spoke at least some English, especially in the city.

I agree with all that you say. I also find it quite therapeutic and creative to do it myself! It feels a bit like I'm creating some art I'd probably be the same about going to a salon in a strange place, not particularly because it's in a different country, but just because it would be a salon that I didn't know and I probably wouldn't know anyone who'd been there to tell me if they were any good.

I have cut my own hair for many years. I cut it right after I trim the dog's hair. Not much difference.

I Used To Cut My Own Hair - Here I am with a professional hair style
I did cut my own hair for many years. I actually think I really didn't do that bad of a job considering the texture of my hair. Since my hair was very curly, making any mistakes were unnoticeable, but I think if I had straight hair that wouldn't be the case. Now I do have my hair professionally styled periodically. I actually like the time to myself to be pampered and I like my hair stylist a lot because she is a personal friend of mine, but you are right; haircuts don't come cheap so I try to spread mine out over a period of six weeks or so.
@liquorice (3887)

It sounds like it's an easier job with curly hair. I've certainly had a few dodgy moments as my hair's quite straight! Doesn't bother me too much though, luckily. It's nice that your stylist is a friend of yours and probably makes the whole experience a lot more fun and relaxing. Thanks for your answer!

I have been cutting my own hair for a long time. My mom showed me how to do it. She used to do it herself, now I cut her hair. She even had a stylist she used to go to get made at her because he thought she went to another stylist for her cut when she did it herself....the woman could not believe she did it herself...LOL Every once in awhile I will go to a pro, but I don't like spending the money on something I can do myself. And nowdays everyone has crazy haircuts so even if I mess up it looks like I got one of those. I get weird looks too. But I think they are just jealous because they do not have the guts to do it themselves...and some people get mad that someone would want ot cut their own hair....oh well.

That's good that you got some instruction from your mom, and nice that you're cutting her hair now. So funny that the stylist thought she'd gone to a competitor, lol! That's a big compliment to her. Yes, I think with all the uneven cuts that people have now it makes it easier to be able to do it yourself, and I agree that some people are jealous about it. But like you say, oh well!

I have never cut my own hair, other than my bangs when I had them. Even that was disastrous about half the time, as they were never straight. I also do not find getting my haircut to be relaxing or fun at all, and hate making small talk with someone I am only going to see every 6 months, at best. The last time I got my hair cut, it was ruined and I had to get it cut again somewhere else. Say, if you are good at cutting hair, would you mind cutting mine? I really do need to get mine cut since I haven't since September.

Lol ! Bit far for me to travel I'm afraid!! Yes, soo annoying to have to go to several hairdressers before you can get the cut you want. It made me laugh what you said about your bangs, as I remember when I was little my mum used to cut my fringe (same as bangs I think?) and she used to cut it crooked. So she'd cut a bit off the other side to make it even, but then that was shorter than the first side and she'd just keep on doing this for a while until we ended up with this really short fringe. (Hope she doesn't read this, she'd not be happy with me for telling that story, lol!)

In the country where I came from, you can pay for haircuts for as low as 2USD. High-end salons will have you pay 20USD but I've never had my hair cut from them. I just go to the low to middle-end salons where I am sure I can get my money's worth. The only thing I've tried with my hair is with my bangs. I asked the stylists a few months ago to give me a haircut with bangs so after a few weeks, these started to grow and I have to trim them myself. But its only a simple trim so I'm sure that I am capable of doing it LOL!

Well that sounds reasonable. It's once the price starts to be equivalent to the cost of a meal (as it is here) that things start to get really silly in my opinion. I hope you're happy with your new haircut and I'm sure that you'll manage to cut your bangs . Thanks for your answer.

I've attempted to cut my own hair when I was younger and now I still do my own fringe sometimes because the salon don't always get it right. I get bored with the inane chat as well, but I do have a mate I sometimes go to, which is not so bad.

Yes, sometimes failed attempts at doing it yourself can put you off! But if you keep trying you can get better at it, (as long as you want to of course, no point otherwise!) Cutting your fringe is good, and probably saves you at least some trips to the hairdresser. It's good that you've got a friend who can do it, very useful

Ah, thanks for your answer, that's nice! Actually if it's long then you could just trim the ends off, you'd probably be able to do it ok. Otherwise, it's hard to get a haircut for free!

I use to years ago. I could cut my hair and put in a perm because my hair is so straight. now I can keep my arms up long enough to cut or put in a perm. so now I go to the wal-mart hair salon and get it cut about every 2 to 3 months longer if I can stand it,

me - hair
yes i do. sometimes....lol to save money for the salon. like you, i feel also that they cant give me the exact cut that i want for my hair. i would rather spend on spa and massage than to get a hair cut at the salon. my hair is easy to cut for i only cut a few edges.

Yes, I've rarely come out of a salon with exactly what I wanted. It's much better to keep your money for things that you want, I definitely agree with that! From your photo it looks as if you cut your hair very well Thanks for answering.

I always cut my own hair. The few times I have had it cut by a stylist I have said, "Just trim an inch and keep the same shape." They cut about a foot off and butcher it into some insane style my dog wouldn't go out in public in. The only time I have gone to a stylist was when I was too ill to do it myself and it really needed trimming. I have been on chemo a lot. It doesn't all fall out, but it starts to look like hell real fast. Now I just live with it until I can do something about it.lol Shalom~Adoniah

Yes, I sometimes wonder if hairdressers know the meaning of an inch or a centimetre; you'd think that it was a necessary part of the training, lol! It made me laugh what you said about stylists butchering it into a style that your dog wouldn't be seen wearing . I'm sorry that you've had to have chemo. I really hope that it's effective quickly and that you don't have to have it for too long. Refuah shelemah, Shalom.

I'd like to, but I'm scared. Right now my hair is very short, so if I mess it up it will be too obvious. Maybe when it grows out a bit I will. But I don't get it cut often. Maybe once or twice a year.

I'm a very low maintenance person and have never been to a hairdresser in my life! When my daughter was visiting, I had her trim my hair to get rid of the split ends and neaten it up a bit. I've cut my own fringe in the past, but it's a bit hard to see the back - so I'll keep asking my daughter, I think!]

Wow, I find that impressive that you've never been to a hairdresser in your life. Well done for avoiding them! I think there are some people who might fear for what would happen to them without a hairdresser . It's good that your daughter's able to help. I agree, the back part's definitely the most challenging part!!

I have an electric head shaver and shave my head every weekend. Since I am giving myself a "crew cut" there is no risk of messing it up - albeit missing a small patch at the back :)
